New (to me) Marlin 39a

Just picked up one for my granddaughter. I haven't checked the serial number to establish a date of mfg, but the dealer says its a late 40's model. Great shape for it's age.

Anyone got any comments on this. I'd like to know as much as possible about it.

The Marlin 39A is a great .22 rifle. The first firearm I ever bought was a 1957 Model 39A with a scope. I bought it used from an Air Force rifle coach in 1971 and still have it. If you post the letter prefix of the serial number I can probably help you confirm the year of manufacture.
 
One of the Best

My 60's vintage 39A gets more trigger time than any other gun I own. It is just loads of fun. Soon, I am going to get a tang or frame mounted peep sight to go on her... Limb-rats beware!

I know that some people of shorter stature have a problem with the stock length on my 39A, as it is designed as an adult rifle. I don't know how old (or more importantly, how tall) your granddaughter is, but this may or may not be an issue for you.

If I had to have only one .22 rifle (what kind of world would that be?) the 39A would be the one. No doubt about it.
 
My first rifle was a Marlin 39A in 1962. It has seen a lot of use. I put a Redfield receiver sight on it. Spent time in my youth slicking up the action and refinishing the stock. It is very smooth. Haven't really checked it with a scope to see its true potential, but it was always good with iron sights.

The number is N126xx. Any idea on the date ? It has a straight lever... No curve to match a curved stock... as there is no real curve in the stock !!!

I looked for my guide but could not find it. However, my rifle is a 1957 model and it's letter prefix is "P". So I would guess yours to be from 1955.

Coincidentally I saw an older Model 39A at my dealers tonight with an "E" prefix. Thatg would be roughly 1945 I think.

I brought it home, and ran about 25 rounds thru it to make sure it fed,fired and ejected. It did that fine. Too cold today to do much more. But it will get used !
 
I'm glad you got the 39. It's a great rifle. Working the lever is almost as fun as pulling the trigger. Take good care of that rifle and your granddaughter will be able to give it to her granddaughter.

Weird. My dad got the one I have as a gift from an Air Force rifle coach (USAFA) in 1968. I wonder if it's the same guy who went around distributing 39A's.

Mines a Golden 39A Mountie s/n A614XXX. Would that be from the 60's??
