I just picked up my first revolver. Found a used S&W 642 CT with Crimson Trace Laser Grips for $449 at Gander Mountain. Anyone have any experience with these? What are your thoughts and opinions about the 642? It's DA only with a heavy trigger pull. It is in dire need of a trigger job.

I think you got a hell of a deal, If you think you trigger is not that great, Have a good smith do you a trigger job. Have had mine done. best money ever spent.

That's a good price. What grips are on it, 405s or 305s? Are they the S&W Logo or CT, not that it matters.

You can dry fire the heck out of it and the trigger will smooth out.

What are your thoughts and opinions about the 642

Here is a few hours of reading discussing the relative merits.

I have the exact same set-up 642-2 with 405 grips. It spends its life mostly in my wife's bedside stand.

Get yourself a Mika Roundcut Pocket Holster, a couple Bianchi Speedstrips and some SGDFSB 135gr JHP +P (assuming a later version rated for such) and you will be good to go.

I got top notch trigger jobs with lighter springs on my J-frames. Money well spent IMO.

I clicked those puppies several thousand times and they never got even close to the smoothness and easiness that I now have.

Make sure you get someone who really knows how to do a trigger job on a J-frame though. Just slapping in some weak springs isn't the way to go and in fact the gun can become undependble with carry ammo if you are not careful.

Sorry, I was wrong. I pulled the 642 CT out of the box and the CT laser grips have the S&W logo on the grips. They look like the 305's.

Sound advise indee Marvin.

You got a steal. Sounds like the grips came on it factory. I've got the exact same set-up and love it. I like having the S&W logo on the grip instead of the CT logo. New , that combo would set you back close to $700.
I've noticed that the CT grips seem to have gone up about $30 in the past 6 months.
Mine does not have the internal lock and, like DAdams, I carry it in a round cut Mikah.
