New to me S&W Model 17 (photos)

Well, as I posted earlier, I've been posting in every gun forum and searching every gun shop within 50 miles for about two years looking for a late Model 17 (with the full lug). This isn't an easy find in California, since you can't bring them into the state.

Then two weeks ago, a forum member tipped me off in email and I finally picked it up today.

Here is the "before" picture, all messed up with a sales tag, tons of fingerprints and ugly rubber tires:



I just knew that with a good, solid cleaning and some nice wood, this glorious pre-lock could reclaim some of it's glory.



I have some traditional medallion target stocks on the way, but threw on these really nice full-checkered rosewood stocks that I had for just such an occasion as a nice find. They cover the backstrap, but they look so nice that I might just keep them. Checkering is sharp and I like it!



Paired up with her sister, the 586-7, they make a nice pair:

I guess I am asking for some sort of sense where there is no sense, but why would the K-22 be banned from import into CA? I can't think of a much less likely gun to be the choice of criminals.

Well, California has an "approved" gun list for guns you can import into the state. They are all current-production guns only. Since the Model 17-6 is no longer in production, in can not be brought into the state via sale. California has a lot of bizarro gun laws, despite being the largest gun-buying state in the nation.

I have another set just like them that I am getting ready to sell on eBay soon. Grips there are going for really high prices, so I'm looking for min. of $75 plus shipping. The wood is nice and the checkering was done by hand... I'm not saying that they are worth that much, but I know I can get that much. Shocking the prices people will pay there.

Just want to report that SJshooter is a man of his word. He said he sent the grips the other day and I got them today. They are every bit as beautiful as he said. Here's a couple of pix of my 8 3/8" 617. Blame the photographer for any flaws, these handles are be-you-tee-ful!

I don't think I'd like to shoot a MAGNUM with those grips.

Why not? You'd have permanent grooves in your hand that would allow you to get the same grip every time!

I have a 17-6 as well, mine was wearing a 1x burris scope with a no drill and tap mount that used the existing rear sight holes, no rear sight though, I removed it and bought a sight off E-bay for $23.

I have some wood Hogues on mine.

Who makes those grips??

SJshooter-thank you for the suggestion, but they are for a round butt. My 19-3 has a square butt.
