1 bullet depth get random depths have a hornady classic basic set. cases trimmed to all same length. if that makes a differance. loading 40/223/308 and 35 rem. on 223 trying for a 2.240 getting everyting from 2.230 to 2.245 #2 on my 35 the bullet when i put it in just sinks into the case dies are new i cleaned and measured everything have to try and get them to stay where i want them untill i can crimp them have lee dies useing the factory crimp die mashing it in to the cannular then if i push on it pretty good i can still move the bullet. don't know if any of this matters but they shoot real good.. killed 5 deer with the 35 this year longest shot was about 175 yards

A variance in OAL of .010 in rifle rounds is not uncommon. It is due to differences in the lengths of bullets, even from the same box, and fit of the seating stem. A measurement of the base to the ogive is a better indication of seating consistency. I also load the .35 Remington, and the OAL varies a bit.

As you have noted, it matters not to accuracy.

Neck tension is what keeps the bullet from being pushed back into the case with pressure. if there is a cannelure and you roll crimp into it, that can help as well, unless you over crimp, which can buckle the neck slightly hurting neck tension. It sounds like you are over crimping. You can polish the expander ball on the sizer down a bit and increase neck tension somewhat. Just polish it down .001, .002, maybe .003 as any more won't really help much.
