At the local gun show this weekend, I had the chance of purchasing one of two S&W Model 19 in similar condition (shooter grade) and price, except one has a 4" barrel, the other 6". Which one would be preferred if I was going purely for accuracy? Would the difference have that much of an effect?

I'm going back tomorrow, as the dealer is holding on to them for me.

If purely for accuracy, then the 6" model would be best, IMO. I have a 6" 686 that I love and I have a 4" mdl 64 that I also love. The 6" would be slightly easier for target work, but with practice the 4" would group just as good. It's all personal preference, really.

The thing is that although I'm coming to love the intricacies of wheel guns, I possess a small stature...so even a K-frame is rather large. But I feel that getting a custom grip would alleviate that problem.

I might just get both...anyone know a good place for custom grips?

The accuracy should be about the same for both. With the longer barrel and sight radius the 6" will be easier to shoot accurately but the 4" is better for holster carry. Personally a 4" is a better compromise for allaround use. JMHO :) Bill

Thanks a bunch, I'll look into it when I've got the time. As for which piece I'll select, it'll probably be the 6" since there's better choices for concealed carry and I'm usually at the range for accuracy.

Accuracy and velocity achieved will be better with the 6 inch. As Sheephearder mentioned, the ease of shooting accurately is mostly due to the longer sight radius.

If I were only buying one I would get the 4inch. I prefer the balance over the 6inch which seems a bit muzzle heavy.

Don't forget pics of your new toy(s) and a range report
