Is the Weatherby 92 a decent gun for trap? Have a chance to pick one up but I don't know much about it except that it was made in Japan.

It depends on how far you want to go in trap. If you just want something fun to shoot around with, it should be fine. I started with an 11-87 and a Benelli. You can shoot just about anything in trap as long as it works for you.

If you want to get competitive, you might want to look into a Beretta 391 or a Browning Citori. The extra mass will help with follow up shots for doubles and the guns are pretty well covered for aftermarket parts. Also if you're doing competitive shooting, you'll want to eventually get stock work and new choke tubes.

If you get into Bunker Trap (also known as International or Olympic trap) you'll definitely want to start with a double barrel and stock work. Having 2 barrels lets you use a different choke for each shot which you'll need because of the speed of the birds. I highly recommend at least trying Bunker, even if you've only got a semi or pump. It's a lot of fun!

Gun for Trap

Most any 12ga shotgun that fits you with a modified choke will work just fine. Mostly its the shooter... not the shotgun that breaks targets. You cannot buy the ability.

You cannot buy the ability

While that is true to a point, success in trap comes from not missing any, as opposed to sporting clays where you are trying to hit as many as you can. That difference tends to mean the need for a dedicated trap gun that fits perfectly, has an excellent crisp target trigger and a high POI/POA
