Indeed it does -- although CW Fitch, who built it made it a bit heavier than is the style nowadays, made a stock for it that does a lot to moderate recoil, and put on a thick resilient pad.
The guy who sold it to me only fired cast bullets in it, at much lower velocities -- he didn't even have loading data for jacketed bullets. He told me, "There were some hunting loads with it when I got it, and they almost tore my head off."
