i've got i aswell

i've got an 1892, the barrell is shot out, but whats the differebce between a 32-20 and a 32-40. the stock and forearm have been refinished because they were broke and cracked. should i do anything with it like a barrell liner.

32-20 and 32-40

32-20 is a caliber for rifle and pistol both, but only rifles ever saw the 32-40. The cartridge will fit in a revolver, but Bad Things happen should you pull the trigger. There were some older 38 rounds the same way (I think). I'm not any kind of 'smith, so I can't advise you at all on the liner.

If your rifle is marked 32-40, you MAY be able to use both, but I really don't know. Find someone who actually knows of what they speak before you decide it's a good idea.

Went to an auction

I went to an auction yesterday and most of the early Winchesters went for way more than you paid. You got a good deal. +1 on not refinishing it.

Wish I could find a vintage 1892 for only $400. Best I've seen recently was a 1901 .25-20 for $1900...
