well, after a LONG wait, i finally got my ruger lcp yesterday. and yes, it was worth the wait. it was sold to me for $270. plus tax instead of the $365-385 i was told at gun shows. i took it out today, fired about 35 rounds through it. it had several fail to feeds. and every time i got to the last cartridge in the magazine, it would jam (fail to feed completely). i am going to take it apart tomorrow and clean it. it was so oilly when they took it out of the bag to get the serial #'s, they had to wipe it down 3 times before they handed it to me. all i did was run a dry patch down the barrel prior to shooting it. so maybe a little (3 or 4 ounces) less oil will let it function better. it is still completely wet everywhere inside the gun, i dont know if this will help or not, but it seems like a good place to start. one thing it does that is way nicer than the kel-tec, is it places MOST of the empties in a 4 or 5 foot radius, so it was WAY EASIER to find the empties than with the kel-tec (which THROWS them anywhere in a 20 foot radius like they came out of a HOWITZER!). i shot the rest of the box out of my kel-tec, and managed to find ONLY 3 of the empty shell casings! utterly rediculous! i am going to have to make up some kind of a deflector so the brass goes in one general direction from the kel-tec.

I always clean a new pistol prior to firing it, perhaps that was the problem. The heavy packing grease is for preservation until sale, not as a functioning lubricant.

On another note, you weren't using UMC ammunition, were you?

Before i took mine out to shoot I broke it down and cleaned everything with Break Free then took a dry cloth and wipre off all the Break Free except in the barrel. Then I use Hi Temp Grease on the outside of the barrel and in the slide grooves... I do this to all m guns.

The LCP really need this cleaning as the factory oil was nasty brown and along with a dirty looking barrel...

Well I have to say you really have a solid pair. I have never taken a gun out to the range straight from the "show room floor" without cleaning it. I dont know for some reason a gob of packing grease just kind of freaks me out. Other than that good luck with the LCP. I love my RugerP90 personally and am looking to get a LCP soon for a backup carry piece.

but UMC should not be a problem, but along with AE ammo that is the second most mentioned round that has caused some FTF. It is good ammo IMO.

I haven't tried UMC yet. I'd read enough stuff about the round being problematic that I have deliberately avoided it so far.

well, i went out this afternoon and shot 20 magtech's and 20 remington umc's through it. had 1 hicup with one of the magtec's not fully chambering (last shot of the second clip). all the rest shot fine. 40 is all i shot as it was as many as i could comfortably carry in my shorts pants pocket. i took the motorcycle out into the woods to shoot. now i remember why i gave up dirt biking! that was a lot more fun when i was young and dumb,, and didnt hurt so da** bad. i think with a little breaking in, it will work fine. at least i hope so.

well, the brass flying out of my kel tec is ALMOST as dangerous as the bullet coming out of the other end! BEWARE LOW FLYING AIRCRAFT!!! LOL!
anyway, get this, the LCP does NOT like fmj's! at least 1 in 10 jams. but i can run 50 jhp's through it with no problems. weird huh? all of the jhp's are reloads, (crimped) i am wondering if i shouldnt try crimping the fmj's to see if the edge of the brass (mouth) is what is hanging them up.

There is something wrong then, as there is no way it won't shoot fmj ammo. Have u talked to Ruger about this??? That is really screwy..

no, i have not contacted ruger. i crimped a small batch of fmj's, i am going to see if this is the problem. they seem to chamber much smoother (by hand working the action). if this cures it, i will look very closely at the front end of the chamber to see if there are any burrs. if i find nothing, then i will talk to ruger. i had to send my kel-tec back to the factory, and i didnt like that experience. not that anything went wrong, i just hate having somebody else having my gun. even if it is the factory. there are only 4 people i trust with my guns, 2 of them are my brothers, and the other 2 are gunsmiths i have dealt with. the biggest part that i dont like is the possibility of my gun coming up missing during shipment. it is all 2 real. if i can keep my gun in my hands, i feel much better.

The only reason hat I mentioned UMC is that when I had my LCP, the UMC ammo gave it fits. I have since sold the LCP since it was literally chewing itself up from the inside out. The metal insert just forward of the retaining pin was gouging beyond belief, so I traded it for another Glock and haven't looked back.

I now use a Kahr PM9 as my "go anywhere" handgun.

it has been a while, but i took the kel tec and the lcp out and shot 2 boxes through them both today. i did a couple of "modifications to the lcp to try to get it shooting better, and i crimped 2 boxes of ammo to go along with that. the modifications were really nothing more than breaking all of the sharp edges everywhere i could find them, and there were lots of them! i used a very fine trigger honing stone to accomplish this. anyway, after doing the above, i shot a box of the crimped ammo through the kel tec and the lcp. both never missed a beat. then i shot a box of straigh factory rounds (magtech fmj's) through each, again, no hick ups from either gun. both shot well, but the kel tec won the accuracy contest. i actually even did something kind of strange, i shot a clip full from each gun @ 100 yards. i hit 3 out of 6 on each on a target about 3' square. not great, but for such a small gun, i didnt think it was terrible. make no mistake, i do not claim to be a good shot. i am just an average joe doing this for fun. anyway, the reason i think the kel tec shoots better is the sharper checkering. i can keep a better grip on it than i can with the ruger. also, the best money i ever spent (on these) was on those little finger/magazine extensions for these litlle guns. they tightened up the groups considerably. well, thats about it, untill i hit some kind of ammo milestone on them, or until something breaks. both are up and running like a singer sewing machine now. and hopefully, they will stay that way!
