I just found out our local trap/skeet range no longer allows barrels less than 26", even if you're an LEO. My friend has a 500 Persuader that is awesome to shoot wobble with, now it's not 'legal'.

logic behind that is? id express my dislike of the rule. point out its no better than the completely arbitrary rules the federales make. boycot and go to a new range if need be

The range I shoot at has the same rule now. It seems the good folks that decided to build their new 1/2 million dollar houses across the street from an existing range, now have an issue with the noise. :fire:

PGC has an iddywa rule that barrels have to be at least 23". They say it because of noise but they do not ban ported barrels which are much louder than Frankenstein's old 21" barrel. Ergo they have an agenda which seems to be aimed at short barrelled shotguns.

Among those shotguns are the various "Youth" models young shooters are often given. While I've seen divers employees there turn a blind eye to a well supervised kid with a Non kosher barrel,, I'm sure others are denied a chance to shoot.

Funny this should come up. When I was out at PG shooting with Dave and the Geezer Squad last Friday - I witnessed this first hand. After "The Squad" had called it a day, Dave and I were going to shoot some wobble trap. While Dave had himself a little break and an ice-cream, I took the Old Man's 20-ga Parker Repro down to field 4 to try it at low-gun skeet. The two guys I squadded with (obvious newbies, but with good attitudes) had, between them, a semiauto Ithaca and a Benelli Nova. The Ithaca had, I'm pretty certain, a broken firing pin so both guys had to use the Nova - which had a very short barrel. By the time we got to Station 3, a range employee came out and told the guys they'd have to take the Benelli up the club house and have the barrel measured. One guy took it up while the other guy graciously agreed to pull the rest of the round for me. As I finished up and headed toward the wobble trap, the other guy came marching by with one of the rental guns they have at PGC - his barrel was "too short" to be used...

Meh - go figure.

wow, this rule seems really stupid, what difference does it make other than swing? Like at all, seriously?
Our club is very loose, nobody around here shoots anything with like a pistol grip or w/e but its not like theres rules against them, they're just not trap guns.

and lol, Dave and the geezer squad? Dost thou refer to Dave McCraken the moderator?

(sorry for the name butcher sir)

I abhor arbitrary rules. Thinking about it makes my head hurt.

About the only rules my club has are safety rules. We wouldn't let anything else fly.

ehhhh

You're forgiven, Ryan, just spell it right on any checks. The term Geezer Squad came from one of the guys referring to themselves as "A bunch of Geezers". Until Ed joined us, I was about the youngest. I turn 60 next month.

A couple of the guys are octogenerians. They manage to outshoot me often.

No question about it, Dave. Some of the clay fraternity look down upon short barrelled guns as reflecting poorly on their sport. I've encountered them when I've shot skeet with my 14" 870.

"Is that gun LEGAL?"

"What you are going to do with THAT? Hold up a liquor store?"

"Are you a police officer?"

"No one NEEDS to have a gun like THAT."

Where I shoot any gun that is legal and used safely is welcomed. This matter was sorted out years ago when some of the IDPA guys came over to shoot skeet. When some of the more uptight skeeters objected they were put in their place rapidly by the range manager.

The only restriction we have is that all shooting must be done from the shoulder. That means no pistol grip only shotguns and more to the point no show-offs demonstrating their prowess at breaking clays firing from the hip.

I'm a regular at the club and my eccentricities are well tolerated. However not too long ago I was shooting with some new members, snooty types, all kitted out in the latest and greatest gear with an assortment of standard grade Berettas and Brownings. They were evidently horrified that I would be shooting my little black pump gun and the impression was left that I was definitely unwelcome on their squad.

Between rounds I mentioned I was going to switch guns. I overheard one of the newbies ask a friend, "I wonder what HE'S going to come back with?" in a tone of voice that sounded like he'd stepped in something unpleasant. Electronic headsets turned all the way often let you hear the most interesting things.;)

Their jaws dropped when I returned with my custom Perazzi 28 gauge o/u.:D

I don't know about that. I've seen an older guy at PG a few times shooting an 870 with a laminate thumbhole stock and fore end. That may be politically different than a synthetic pistol grip stock, but it isn't really functionally different.

I agree that it seems like an arbitrary rule against "tactical" looking guns. . . along the lines of the "no hi-cap mags" rule at the Hap Baker range.

I can understand rules like that as it could become a safety or equipment damage issue if some yahoo tries shooting from the hip and starts hitting the house.

My SX2 gets funny looks a fair amount of the time, but I've never really been made to feel unwelcome.

Paul, there's way too many "Silly Little Tribesmen" out there IMO. But t'were I to break out one of Corriea's Saiga shorties at a meeting of the Geezers, most of them would line up to try it out. A good bunch.

Others at PGC definitely would not be so, uh, ecumenical. I don't shoot with some of them and some of them do not shoot with me. Fine with me on both counts.

As to those snooty newbies, my money says you and your EBS kicked major tush. Life's little lessons.

Snobbery and elitism reflect poorly on any facet of endeavor.

Nico, you may possibly not see him again. Karl Pacifico, who shot such a stock setup, died two months ago or so. May he rest in peace. Nice guy....

There are some Silly Little Tribesmen where I shoot but they are in the minority. Most often when I bring out the 14" I get lots of requests to try it out. The regulars really like the Federal Gold Medal target load because of the very prominent muzzle flash when shooting under the lights.

And it works both ways. Last week a new guy showed up with old bolt action Stevens 12 gauge. He seemed a little ill at ease but he could sure shot that old shotgun full choke and all.

On the second round I suggested we switch guns. I handed him my P-gun and I shot his Stevens. We both had a gas. He'll be back. Another clay target addict in the making.:D

Shotgunning isn't about posing. It's about fun.

Now I'm thinking about adding a little bolt action to my collection.

This is why FUDDS will loose our rights to own firearms.

COMPLAIN LOUDLY start a campaign against them or give up your rights. Campaign for no PORTED guns as the noise bothers you.

I shot a 21 with my Serbu shorty 20 ga. last week gave the Fudds fits but by the end of the night they wanted to try it..

Fudds are the gun rights enemy and should be fought against as hard as the Brady Bunch.

Bold actions are fun, Paul. I thought of getting another one with a 36" barre; as a pure D singles gun.

I've shot a 14" 870 at night with 00. Plenty of flash, left me night blind after the first shot.

Thanks, Nico. He had no family left. He was 84.

Gezzer, ported guns do not bother me. Hypocrisy does. Agendas do. Silly Little Tribes do.

Trapshooters think ill of skeet shooters. Benchrest rifle shooters think Practical shooters are Rambo wannabees. M/L hunters think bowhunters wound and cripple way too many deer.

The real enemies are not skeeters, IPSC folks or archers. The real enemies are Sarah Brady, Josh Sugerman, UpChuck Schumer and The Hillary. Other real foes are those that council appeasement, "Reasonable Gun Control" and trash like this silly 23" rule.

I do not care if the shooter next to me on the line is shooting a Piotti or a Crescent, a break open or a belt fed auto. I Do care if he/she is safe, willing to help new shooters and votes progun.

Dismounting from pulpit....

applause,,,, applause,,,applause.....whistle,,,,applause......yells!!!! git back up there dave you're doin fine never heard them called tribesmen but i like it,,,and it fits

ocharry (who likes to shoot everything):D

I bet PGC wouldn't let you shoot skrap off of picnic tables....It is amazing how being 9' tall changes perspectives...

26" is a stupid and arbitrary rule. I'm glad my club isn't that stupid.

Even if you DO want to ban HD guns from the clay range due to some bad experiences, do you want to ban guns like the walnut and polished-blue 21-24" upland shotguns from Remington and Browning? What about young shooters? Kids' shotguns generally have barrels a good deal shorter than 26". A range with no kids is a range with no future.

Furthermore, more than one avid clay shooter got hooked one day when he strolled over to the trap and skeet range to see if he could hit anything with the HD gun he was testing out at the pistol range...
