I installed a new trigger set, I know I have to re-adjust the thumb safety so I re-fit it.

Now I noticed that when the thumb safety is in fire (disengagae), I can move the hammer all the way until it touches the grip safety, if it is engaged (safety) the hammer only has a very little movement or play.

Is this normal?

I am not sure I fully understand, but if this is a 1911, you shouldn't be able to move the safety to the "ON" (up) position unless the hammer is at full cock.

No, it is not normally normal.

With the thumb safety engaged, you should still be able to pull the hammer back further until it will completely depress the grip safety by it hitting on the GS tang.

Your milage may vary with beaver-tail safetys & commander hammers of various & assorted makes & models.

Hi, rcmodel,

I may be misunderstanding, but on a 1911 the thumb safety will NOT engage unless the hammer is already cocked, so you CAN'T pull the hammer back with the thumb safety engaged.

Hi, Glenjoy,

Do you mean cocking the hammer from the down position with the safety engaged? If so, see above. Or do you mean moving the hammer back beyond the full cock position with the safety engaged? That is a matter or the geometry of the hammer and the way the sear interfaces with it. If all is correct, there should be no difference, but with the clone makers ignoring specs, the hammer face might have the wrong curve so the hammer will be hard to move back past the full cock with the safety on.

My Series 80 is just the opposite. With hammer back and safety disengaged you can pull the hammer back until it depresses the GS. With the hammer back and safety on pulling back on the hammer more just wiggles the thumb safety a little bit.
