Dont want to swap barrels but wondering if a new upper in 458 Socom or 450 Bushmaster will work on this rifle. Does full upper come with new bolt which from reading it appears it does.

It will depend on what you’re looking at. Many “complete upper” advertisements mention later the lack of CH and BCG (charging handle and bolt carrier group). Read carefully and always use a unique (each upper gets its own) bolt for each upper, preferably a whole BCG.

1) .450b and .458soc uppers will work on your S&W AR lower.

2) Anything can be sold, so anything can be bought - some “complete” uppers come with BCG’s, some don’t. Most are well described, some aren’t.

3) You’ll probably want to buy a complete upper, rather than simply buying only a new barrel, unless you’re committed to converting forever. You’ll need a larger ejection port for these large caliber cartridges so you’d have to alter your current upper. A complete upper should come already cut.

4) Between the .450 and .458, I prefer the .458. Some guys want the option to load inexpensive .451-2” pistol bullets for plinking - I’d rather have a broader selection of appropriate .458” rifle bullets, and a shoulder for head spacing. I ran the .450b for a while, fine cartridge and the difference in the two isn’t significant.

Mid south shooters supply has the 458 Socom full upper with bolt and charging handle carbine length for 399.00. Bear creek upper I think. Don't know if it's any good or not but price not so bad. Would make a nice gun to reload for. Don't know about cast bullets but I think I have a 458 mold. I don't want to plink with it. I prefer to hunt some of these big mountain hogs we have here.
