I purchased a 1976 Merkel 47-SL 12 gauge s/s shotgun. I was told that the gun spent most of its life on a gun dealer's shelf in Sweden and basically has never been used. From the photos, it looks like it is in excellent condition.

I have a three day inspection period. What things should I check for and look for when the gun arrives tomorrow?

Are there any quirky things about Merkel in particular that I should watch for?

:what:

Sounds like you shelled out some money!

I'm not a doubles expert, but let me echo a few folks who are.....

"Ring" the barrels. Separate them from the receiver and forend, hang them b the lug and tap them with something non marring. A clear tone indicates they are properly soldered together. Buzzing, etc, means expensive repairs at best.

Next, put the receiver and barrel back together but do not close the action nor install the forend.Shake the part and see if there's play at the hinge.

If it passes that, close the action and hold it up to the light, looking from the side. There should be no light showing between the barrels and breech. Next, see if a piece of Scotch tape on the breech stops it from closing fully.

Also, the top lever should be angled to the right, not straight back if it's new condition.

HTH.....
