I don't know about the ammo but am interested in hearing your impressions on the revolver. So...what do you think of it?

Paul

where you guys getting ammo for these?
I just bought a 80+ year old Colt Police Positive that takes the same ammo. (I haven't decided yet if I'll also get a Webley.) I bought a hundred pieces of .38 S&W brass from Starline and intend to reload it -- start with 148 grain HBWC bullet and about 2.5 grains of Bullseye at 1.24" length. 9mm Luger dies should work with the right shellholder. I also cut some .38 Special brass down to the right length; those willl work if they don't split the first time I use 'em.

Does the Webley you got look as nice as the picture in the ad? Did you pay the extra $10 for "hand select"?

Webley might shoot low with 145 grain commercial ammo or 148 grain handloads. Their sights should be regulated for 200 grain bullets.

Flash,
Sure would like to a range report sometime. Nice revolver by the way.

I thought by the title of your thread that someone was actually making them again. You mean "New" as in new to you. They have not made Webly revolvers in many years though the top break design is the fastest to reload.
I wish someone would make a modern top break revolver that takes full moon clips for action shooting sports like IDPA.

Just bought one myself from a local dealer that deals with SOG. i believe these guns are ex-Hong Kong Police 1950s issue. The mark IV Webleys were made into the early 1970s. Mine looks like it was never issued. Loading up some 158 grain loads and will report after I've had some range time.

I have been kicking around the idea of buying one of these SOG Webley's. Really looking forward to a range report from you guys.

I really like the gun..... I paid for the handpick... it looks brand new except for a mark on the bottom of the barrel where it appears they got a little wild while engraving the import marks.....

I also see why these are referred to as wobbly Webleys.... the cylinder does not lock tightly in place....It will prolly be a couple weeks before I get it to the range as I need to find ammo first....

$35 is about the going store price for .38 S&W today. The days of $2.25 a box are gone.

Your experience reminds me of an old story about a man going into a grocery store.

"How much for a bag of beans?" he asked the grocer.

"Five dollars", was the reply.

"But the guy down the street only charges three dollars."

"So why don't you buy from him?"

"He doesn't have any."

"Well, when I don't have any, they are two dollars."

Jim

The safety, why did they have to spoil such a fine specimen with that cobbled in safety?

I know they had to do it to get import points but damn.

No, actually I believe the safety is original to these Hong police contract revolvers, and also the very similar Singapore Police contract revolvers. The Singapore version has a safety lower on the frame, closer to the grip. I guess they decided that they needed it for some reason, maybe to prevent someone grabbing it from the holster and snapping off a shot? Holsters used then were much simpler affairs than they are now.

I live/work in Singapore and coincidentally have just been in contact with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) today about trying to find specific info on my Webley SPF contract revolver, which is back in my collection in the States. If anything interesting comes up, I'll put up a post.

On the sample that I saw yesterday a hole was drilled through the frame just above the point on the release lever where you put your thumb, a sliding hammer block fills the hole. another hole down through the left side of the frame beside the hammer. A detent and spring ill this hole. The safety was easy to push on and a royal pain to push off.

I just bought a "war finish" Webley with no safety off of gunbroker. (I gotta stay away from that place for a while; 2 guns in one week.) I'm hoping it has all the British proof marks, and no import marks.

I have some 158 grain Remington SWC bullets with a hollow base that I'll use for the Webley until I can find a mold for something heavier that fits. (and 148 HBWC's for the Colt.) The Webley should be the stronger gun of the two so I can use it for my load development, along with a chronograph to sanity check them.

I've heard from a couple of sources that S&W K-frame speed loaders will fit the Webley .38's. If so, it may become my HD gun if I can find something that shoots close to POA. :D
