I am having a problem... I have been wanting a walther P99 ( in 9mm)for a long time now. I also like the XD9. If money was not a problem I would for sure go with the P99, but it is. My problem is I can get a brand new XD9 ( with the whole package... 2 16 rd mags, mag pouch, holster..etc) with a LIFETIME WARRANTY for 475 and some change. And I can get a brand new P99 ( with 2 15 rnd mags, back straps, etc...) with a 1 YEAR WARRANTY for 615 and some change, or a used P99 for 523 and NO WARRANTY. I have heard great things about both guns, and have shot the P99 but not the XD. Do you think the lifetime warranty is better than the only 1 year from walther. Which would you choose and why?

If money was not a problem I would for sure go with the P99, but it is.
The Walther P99 and S&W 99 were are a collabrative effort between Walther and S&W. S&W is the US importer, distributor, and service company for Walther. They also manufacture some guns in the US for Walther, such as the PPK, which do not meet import requirements. On the SW99 Walther privided all the engineering and the frames. S&W built the slides & bbls. The SW99 was a great stop-gap measure for S&W after the legal issues with the Sigma, and before the recently introduced M&P semi-auto line.

I say all that to get to this. The SW99 is now discontinued, but you should be able to find a used one. The SW99, like all S&W products, is backed by their lifetime warranty. With the SW99 you get essentially the same gun - the Walther experts here can fill you in on the exact minor differences - with the peace of mind of a lifetime warranty. As a bonus the S&W version has a slightly lower demand and should cost $50 to $100 less than the Walther for guns in the same condition. I'd also recommend looking for one of the more recently made SW99s with the standard light rail, as opposed to the older propriety rail; this bit on the light rails also applies to the Walther P99.

Here are some better prices, but you'd have to pay for shipping and handling and FFL transfer fee (should be $25 or so), but no tax (unless you live in KY), so it would still likely save you some money.

I really, really like the P99s. I have the AS version and I am pretty sure I olinked to an AS version. It's light (it feels like nothing when I pick it up, even with 15 rounds in the mag) and it has a double strike capability, something rarely if never found on striker fired, hammerless pistols. I love the looks of them too. If you can swing it or find a gently used one, I would go for it. As much as I love Sigs, if I had to keep only one gun and it could not be a Sig, I am pretty sure it would be my Walther P99. However, you can't go wrong with either. I have an XD .45 5" and really like it. But I would take the P99.

Yeah I saw that same gun ( the P99)the other day on Buds Guns. However this is my first major handgun purchase, and I have never bought one online before. How would I go about doing that. I know I have to find a gun store that it could be shipped to, but I'm not sure about the details.

I too love the looks on it and have heard nothing but great things about it. I might just go ahead and get this one. I would consider the SW99 but for some reason I just don't like the looks of compared to the Walther. But the lifetime warranty is mighty nice..

I got my SW99 at a gun show in June 06 for 459.00. It was NIB with night sights.

well, I used to own a P99 (one of the "full german" ones or whatever too) and still own two xd's, which I guess says something. The p99 was a nice gun, always went bang, easy take down, etc. However both of my xd's would shoot rings around it accuracy wise. May have just been my sample or something. But it was awfully hard to justify the more expensive P99 given that. The xd's have both been utterly reliable as well, also easy to take down, like the feel better, and they are surprisingly accurate. My vote would be go new xd. But both guns will probably serve you well, and if you've always had your heart set on the P99, that's fine too. If possible shoot the xd to compare, since you've already shot the P99. You may find you love or hate one or the other.

See, I am on the other side of the table - I shoot my P(9 better than I do 1911s. I have rented an XD, and didn't much care for it.

Now, there are several versions of the P99 trigger - the A/S version is the best one, and is my fav.

I've given up buying expensive 1911s because I shoot so well with my P99 and SW99.

I have owned an XD .40 and a Walther P99 .40 AS.I happen to go through guns like white T shirts...I just sold the P99 .40 AS to a local place and got $425 for it.

I personally like the XD platform much more as a whole. Don't get me wrong, the P99 AS is a VERY high quality sleeper that doesn't get the credit it deserves. Has great ergos, a nice single action trigger, I like the decocker, etc. It just wasn't for me. I think the XD trigger is just as good as the P99s since it is basically a permanent single action. I actually like it better because it stacks up just right before it fires. It just has a good, consistent squeeeeeeze, POP....still light and crisp though. I don't like safeties at all, but the XDs have 2 GREAT natural safties built in. It adds piece of mind, and doesn't get in the way because you don't have to worry about whether or not the gun is in DA or SA mode or whether or not the safety is on or off. Super safe, but always ready to go when you grab it and pull the trigger...and no surprises. Same trigger pull every time and it also has a more comfortable shape than the P99 IMO. I also like the loaded chamber indicator and cocked firing pin indicator on the XD. The bore axis is lower on the P99, but the XD absorbs recoil better and feels better when shooting overall.

I have normal sized hands and fingers, and for some reason the P99 starts to hurt my trigger finger after a few magazines. The mag release is actually pretty convenient and I like it. XD also has good ambi mag release though. There aren't too many sight options available for the P99 either. I don't like the rear detent system that holds the sight in place, and I don't like the pinned in Glock-style front sight either. I think its plastic too...

Also, the P99 isn't too light friendly. There isn't as much room up front like there is with the XD. My TLR-2 light/laser was a far better fit on my XD than the P99. I had to take out the little knobby thing on my TLR-2 that goes into the notch on the light rail for it to even work with the P99. This is less secure since the light would just slide right off if it loosened up after lots of shooting. I'm not too sure how the Surefire lights work with the P99. It also just looked better on the XD.

Last but not least, I just didn't like the "feeling" I got when holding/shooting my P99. It just doesn't feel as solid and "badass" enough for me. The whole look and feel is just a little too elegant for my taste. I like the blocky, mean look of the XD vs. the sleeker, wimpier look of the P99.

It's really up to you, but I have to tell you that you will NOT be disappointed with either gun. I'd save the money and go with the XD if I were you. If you are like me, you will end up happier in the long run with it. Just my 2 cents i guess....good luck.

*edit* I will also agree with the guy above that accuracy with my XD was much better than the P99. The P99 was praised for its accuracy, but I didn't get this experience. I still shoot the XD more accurately than any other gun I've owned. Everyone is different though and it was obviously just me that couldn't shoot the P99 accurately.

I think the P99 is a far sexier gun. Having said that, I absolutely hate the way it feels when I shoot it. This is weird to me, because I love the way it feels in my hand when I'm not shooting it.

I own two XDs.

At the end of the day, both guns are extremely reliable, and extremely accurate. Which one feels better to you?

I think it should come down to which gun you like the feeling of more. In my opinion the free holster for the XD is worth exactly what you pay for it. S&W handles the warranty for P99's they imported and I've never heard them charge someone for P99 service no matter how old it is. They treat you like a S&W customer, send you a prepaid next day air shipping label, etc.
