Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but it appears that in order to renew their licenses or permits, New Yorkers who own guns sold with high-capacity magazines will have to provide proof that they've purchased new "legal" magazines, and that their old magazines have been disposed of or destroyed. A scanned copy of the letter from NYPD License division is linked below:

Does the NYPD even have the authority to require such documentation? This seems highly questionable.

Since when is the onus of responsibility on gun owners to PROVE compliance with the law?

Nazi Germany is alive and well here in the states...

How are you supposed to prove you destroyed your 'illegal' magazines? To add to that....how are you going to prove your picture, video, whatever, is actually you and your magazines?

This is beyond crazy

Unreal. Just like with the new Colorado magazine law, this is totally unenforceable, and ridiculous.

And just liKe in CO, is there compensation for being forced to destroy property? Is that even legal?

(CO law makes it illegal to sell them even to somebody out of state unless you move out of state first)

Gun control at its finest!!:barf:

First they register them and then start adding little "rules" that will result in loss of permit if you don't comply.........

In addition, any rifles or shotguns that fit the state's previous definition of "assault weapon" must be surrendered and invoiced, and can be modified or sold at a later date. Any that meet the new additions to the definition (i.e. Thumbhole Stocks) must be registered.

Gun owners should move out of New York and take their income and taxes with them.

They are never going to stop until there are no legal guns left, except those in the hands of the government.

I left NYC in 1997 and have never looked back.

How about sending back a letter saying, "Before I prove I've disposed of my high-capacity magazines, please send me documentation proving you're not bat-<deleted> crazy."

That documentation will be supplied by the NYPD SWAT team when they kick down your door to confiscate your registered firearms (that are now illegal because you didn't renew your permit).

Won't they be embarrassed when they find nothing?

^^^They will not be embarrassed; they simply don't care one bit about you, the constitution, your property or what happens to you. They just want to go home at the end of they day, and read their fat pension bank statements, and muse over all the discounted food they scarf down at the local eateries. New York is just as bad (if not worse) than California; The politicians enact gun control, the willing police enforce it, and you, Joe citizen, are holding all the bags.

Yeah, kind of the same way the IRS is embarrassed when they don't find your required tax payment in the envelope. ;)

You either come up with what they want, spend lots of money on lawyers, or go to jail. Doesn't matter one way or the other to them.

It's New York. They have been running their Govt. this way for 170 years. Chicago is the same. First, you have to "prove" something that's impossible to "prove", that way they can always deny you anytime they want because YOU failed to comply. It's all RIGGED, see? If you play by their rules you cannot win.

I saw a post the other day with the title "I BOUGHT A GOVERNOR". It referred to the Taurus revolver, but at first I thought it was from Michael Bloomberg and referred to Maryland.
