Caught off guard by a burglar so you do what? Take a photo if in a a safe location? And if not? Scream? Don't do anything is the suggestion even though we have a right to defend ourselves. The Sheriff is more concerned with the criminals safety than the victims?

Arrests Made In Clinton County Break-Ins
Officers Offer Few Details In Case

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Police said they've arrested two people who may be connected to as many as 40 break-ins in Clinton County in recent weeks.

Police Have Suspects In Plattsburgh Crime Spree

Officers have not released much information about the arrests.

They said members of the public should use the break-ins as an opportunity to discuss what to do in case someone breaks into their home.

"Our biggest concern is a resident being caught off guard by a would-be burglar and taking some kind of enforcement action on their own," said Clinton County Sheriff Dave Favro.

Investigators said they think the burglaries were motivated by drugs, as most area crimes are. They said that while people have it within their rights to protect themselves and their property, they hope people won't take any actions on their own.

Officers encouraged residents to instead keep watch for people acting suspiciously. They said anyone in a safe position to report the suspicious behavior could take a cell phone photo, or write down a description or license plate number.

The police recognize the right of citizens to protect themselves but suggest they call the police if they see anything suspicious. I don't understand the problem here.

Let's use this opportunity to discuss what to do in case someone breaks into our homes.

Well, if you live in Malibu, CA, you should probably breathalyze them before shooting. It might be Morton Downey Jr., Nick Nolte, or someone else harmless and famous...

I think that taking enforcement action on my own would be a poor choice. If you want to, have at it. The possible consequences far outweigh the possible benefits.

I think they are saying if you see someone suspicious that you should take a picture, not if you are a victim of a home invasion.

And if you are burglarized and you and your family are not home, your gun won't do you any good.

However if you don't have to act in order to protect your loved ones or yourself it might be better to let the criminal leave. Repairing a broken window or door is probably going to be much less of a hassle without legal fees and the police arresting you. Don't you think?

The sheriff would not do well if he had to run for election in Arizona. Around where I live it's unlikely anyone could commit 41 break-ins and still be walking. :uhoh:

I'm going to echo others here and say that what was meant was that they don't want you to act on something suspicious, but call it in. However, they're not saying you have to bend over and take it if you're the victim.
