New to the forum and getting back to the range after 20 years.

After getting stuck on the night shift, I have the time to get back out to the range.
My last experience at the range was under the employment of Uncle Sam. So it's been awhile, and I can't really say that I retained everything, but I'm amazed that I do recall so much! Maintenance, Immediate Action, Care and Feeding... and above all SAFETY.So I guess I was trained rather well, I was even the assistant Armorer for my Co. for a spell.

I did some research and have put together a starter Rifle to get reacquaint myself with the fun of shooting.

Probably should have gotten a .22:) but...

I chose the Rock River Arms LAR-15 with an A4 upper & 16" bbl. mostly due to my fimiliarity with the rifle and the designs tested performance.

It came with a Standard carry handle with A2 sights, and a sling. I also bought an Eotech 552 which I can mount on the top of the receiver.

I plan on going to the range this weekend and punch some paper and break it in, and here's where I can use all the help I can get. So if anyone could offer some tips on where to get started, I'm all eyes.

My Equipment list for the range, Along with the rifle/optics mentioned above follows :

500 RD M855PD 5.56x45
4 - Orelite 30 Rd Mags blocked to 15 rd cap
1- Armalite 20 Rd Mag blocked to 15
1 - Konuspot80 20~60x80 Spotting Scope
1 - Howard Leight Leightning 31 Earmuff

I'll Need :

Shooting Glasses
Targets , One range Is 50 - 100 the other 200-300,

I'll try to Find A GI cleaning kit as well. Anything else I might need?

Any and all help appreciated, criticism welcomed too,but will be weighed at time of sale ;)

Thanks

Bebe

Get a one-piece cleaning rod, either nylon coated or polished stainless, and a rod guide to align the rod and keep it from beating up the chamber throat. That will be much easier on your barrel than a rough, jointed GI set. Save the surplus outfit for emergencies like getting caught in the rain.

If the RR barrel is not chrome plated, you might benefit from a target shooter's breakin procedure. Shoot one, clean, shoot one, clean. For five or more passes. Then shoot three, clean; shoot five, clean. If you are still getting blue copper stains on the patches keep cleaning frequently until your barrel is burnished and fouling is reduced or eliminated.
