Hello All,

I just ordered a Pedersoli Harpers Ferry Flintlock pistol in .58 cal and was wondering about how much powder is recommended. I've seen the Goex load data that says 70 grains of FF...? Is there a source for reliable flintlock load data?

Since I'm just starting out I had another question...can these pistols be fired w/o the ball? (just powder & patch?)

Thanks in advance!

For the .58 cal percussion pistol (which should be the same as flintlock), the Gun Digest Black Powder Loading Manual says:

30 gr FF = MV 577, ME 388, Vel @ 50 yds 554fps, Energy @ 50 yds 358
40 gr FF = MV 657, ME 503, Vel @ 50 yds 631fps, energy @ 50 yds 464
50 gr FF = MV 730, ME 621, Vel @ 50 yds 701fps, energy @ 50 yds 573
60 gr FF = MV 802, ME 750, Vel @ 50 yds 766fps, energy @ 50 yds 684

This is using the .575" 500 gr Lyman Minie (mould #575213). Mind you that you'll be using a round ball and not a minie ball (the Minie wasn't invented quite yet). MV & ME will be different but I wouldn't exceed the max. load recommended by GD. If you shoot for accuracy, you'll find that a lighter charge will also be more accurate.
