I saw a beautiful Russian mosin nagant at a gun show last week and the price was pretty nice($150.) The reason I didn't buy it was that the dealer told me 7.62 x 54r is a rimfire round. Is this true? I had no idea that a round that large could be rimfire. I couldn't find any difinitive information on the web-any help would be appreciated.

Not true! Most of what I have are mil surplus that are corrosive. If you shoot these be sure to clean with GI Bore Cleaner. The cartridge does have a rim but is not rimfire.:scrutiny: -Don

7.62x54R is most definitely a centerfire cartridge. You can verify this for yourself by noting the primer smack dab in the center of the rear of the cartridge.

You hear some crazy things at gunshows...

The "R" at the end indicates that it has a rim (like the 30-30), rather than an extractor groover (like the .308).

7.62x54R is roughly comparable in power to the .308, and is readily available and affordable in the U.S. You can buy a Moisin with no hesitation.

and along with your Mosin, perhaps a recoil pad.
The hotter stuff (usually the heavy ball) really has a kick to it.

Great fireball though. Its worth touching a few off at night just to fully apprecicate it.

Like Don said, it is a rimmed cartridge (that's what the "R" in the designation means), but it is definitely centerfire not rimfire. It is somewhat archaic in that respect, rimmed centerfire rifle cartridges having fallen out of favor in modern times. You can forgive it somewhat, having been designed in the nineteenth century and being a contemporary of the 30-40 Krag-Jorgensen.

It is, however, a cartridge with a lot of life left in it. I believe the 7.62x54R is still in active duty with the Russian military for one of their LMGs. Quality surplus ammo is readily available, as well as non-corrosive new production.

The rifles are a hoot to shoot, and are a great deal at the price. I have two, and even use one as my brush hunting gun. It's a great rifle for starting the milsurp addiction.

It has a centerfire primer and a RIM, but there is no primer compound in the rim. Ammo is readily available thanks to surplus, and it is on par for power with the .308.

THe rimfire priming method has been loaded into somerather large rounds, particularly in the last century.

rimfires were actually made in all types of sizes, this is not one of them. As for the Mosin, the best 100 dollar rifle you will ever buy.

Thank you all for your information. I hope I run accross another deal like that one.

You will find one. www.aimsurplus.com is an example of the prices you can get by buying via the internet (currently $69.95 for either a M44 or 91/30) and having them ship it to your local dealer. Usually a $15-$25 charge from your dealer - plus tax.

Heck, just get a Curio & Relic license (search for info; lots on here about it). You can have the things sent straight to your door, and you get discounts from places like Brownell's. It is worth the time it takes to wait for it (took me a couple weeks, took others a few months), and you'll save the $30 application fee rather quickly.

Then you can get ads for stuff like Mosins, Enfields, and the like and jump on the deals whenever you choose.

Mosins are great rifles and plentiful. There are a few variations (91/30, M38, M44, then all the Finnish varieties, and sub varieties within like round or hex receiver). The rifles are mostly inexpensive (lots of them are under $100). Ammo is plentiful and DIRT cheap (I paid around $60 for 800 rounds of surplus ammo). They're simple, tough and reliable.

Mosin Nagant surplus ammo is...

corrosive primered. You have to clean the rifle after shooting or the bore will rust. Just spray some ammonia Windex down the bore, 5 squirts, and a squirt on the bolt face, then clean normally. Fun rifles to shoot. 150 bucks is a bit steep unless it is a Finland stamped, SA, rifle.....chris3

I carry a small bottle of windex -d with me to the range and do a quick cleaning of the barrel and bolt while it is still warm.works great and a reg cleaning when I get home.if your really cheap hot soapy water works fine to flush out the corr. salts.
