I have heard it is not good to store you gun with the firing pin cocked.

If the fore-end of the 870 is pulled back (chamber open) is there still tension?

Would I need snap caps?

P.S. - As some of you know I chipped in to get a Beretta O/U for my dad's b-day.. Anywho the instruction manual said to use snap caps when storing... Good idea?

Hmmmmm......I've never heard anything like that before. I store mine cocked all the time and it works fine.......30 years later.

False rumor. Don't worry about it.

Snap caps are used for dry firing. You won't need them unless you plan to dry fire the gun quite a bit. IIRC, the trigger system on Beretta O/U's is inertia operated, so you're only going to be able to release spring tension on one hammer anyway. An 870 you can pretty much run over with a tank without hurting it, so don't worry about a spring.
