Today was a fun day. Got some nice range time in with my new rifle + some surplus ammo...

The camera does some weird things with the flash that make it look chromed and or dirty in places but that is it. The scout mounted scope is a Leupold. No idea what power.

pretty close. Seems a little bigger than when im looking through it. Difficult picture to take.

The Yugo surplus. Shot 71. 2 case failures. 6 FtF on first strike. All FTF shot on 2nd strike. Heavier spring time for the FtF.

I took a look before firing and after on everything today.

I wouldn't have known the 2 cases split at all if I wasn't inspecting every one

As discussed earlier there isnt and consistency to the years and factory's for split cases but they where 11/49 and 11/51.

I'm not sure what the steel looking round is. Was hoping some had some insight on it. Its stamped UXA 44.

Ok dont laugh. Im actually getting better. I dont flinch eyes wise. I run out of breath and pull the shot. I can see down the scope when I do it and curse and load another one ....

Had 3 rounds left at the end of the day. Got lucky 2x it seems

Overall had allot of fun and I'm getting better.

I Have the same kind of Rifle but I couldn't find a scope that would work mounted like that so I put a large scope on it.Your's work's great.I never shot surplus ammo out of mine because of it being corrosive. Now I got another reason not to.Thank's for the pic's not bad.How do you like the M-48?I love mine,But I'm into mil-surp's.Do you Re-load for it too?

That's awesome !! I love my mausers. Looks like you had a great time !
I can see that smile on your face. I went today, the weather was better than expected, but a little breezy. I was shooting handloads in my .300 Savage and
.375 Winchester Marlin. When you decide to start reloading (as I do for the mausers as well) you will really appreciate the versatility of the 8mm mauser,
it's a great round. You can load 150,175,180,200,& 220 grn bullets. I havn't tried the 220's yet, but the rest work well in all my mausers.

@Hizzie I'll check the bolt for crud. Everything else is very clean on the rifle though.

@Beak50 I dont reload yet. Its looking like im going to have to if I want to shoot often. Its a blast to shoot. The only problem is now I want a Mosin too..

@tahoe2 It was about 34 or so. I dont mind it. Wow those rifles are clean.

I've shot a few hundred rounds of 196gr Yugo surplus from 1953, no FTF or split cases in my K98. Looks like you got a bad batch. Also have some 1978 Romanian 155gr FMJBT in steel cases that works well too.

The Mauser is much nicer to shoot and more accurate than my Mosin, and the Mauser just looks better!

Happy shooting!

Oh cool. I just bought 900 rounds f 1953 yugo ammo. Good to hear you had no trouble with yours, ssyoumans. This will probably be my only batch of Yugo that I'll buy in bulk. I'll get some other milsurp 8mm next time (maybe Turkish? Romanian? What's better?).

Surplus Yugo 8mm has a lot of knockdown power too. I really like the Turk , they give a very distinct kick . Most say they were loaded to the max to match the long Turk mauser performance. Besides remember how the Ottoman Turks routed the Aussie forces in Gallipoli in WW1 ?

Romanian is usually light ball and is hard to find. I stopped shooting surplus, second strikes and extra cleaning got old. I reload so for my now sporterized M48 and get some pretty good groups and have the ability to adjust loads for what I want, especially for hunting purposes.

The ammo in the pictures looks like turk, not yugo. I've yet to see a yugo 8mm round with the nickel colored bullet jacket. Yugo from the 50's rarely splits in the body. Splits are usually on the neck and those are still pretty rare. Turk, however, is known for lots of case failures at a high rate.

The silver colored round was the only one its kind so far.

I'll open some more boxes and see if there is any more.

wait a minute I'm confused. The ammo pictured looks like Turkish ammo, with the cupro-nickel bullet. The yugo's are copper. I shot a bunch of TUrkish (silver ball) and yugo (bronze ball) yesterday. Also, I couldn't tell the difference in kick back between hese two. I was loading one yugo and one turk and shooting them :)
