For 1911's I'd look at .45acp's not .40. 1911 are best as .45's.
Anyways for 1911's I like are the Springfield Loaded, Kimber TLE, Kimber Custom II, Colt. Classic styled 1911's like the Sprinfield GI, Milspec, and some Colts are nice if you want that classic look.
I try to avoid the highend 1911's and prefere basic but good ones. Then I concentrate on making them reliable (if needed). Then have the best of 'em refinished with Melonite. Usually I have to replace recoil springs, grips, use Wilson 47D magazines, and find ammo they like. Once I do that I end up with a reliable gun. Some 1911's can be picky, not all, thats just the nature of the beast. I only use fullsize 5" 1911's. The smaller ones don't work well for me. Don't really know why. All my smaller guns are Glocks. (odd huh?)
The GI, Milspec guns, have a hammer that bites my hand because I ride up on the grip so I stick to my TLE and CDP as they have the extended tails. I wish I could get a GI with a tail. I might get one and install a drop in tail. I love the classic look of the basic GI.
You'll probally need target sights on your 1911 for competing though. I know the Kimber Custom and TLE can be had with target sights, not sure 'bout the Springfields.
I'd get a Springfield Loaded or Kimber TLE, unless you don't allready have a Glock 19...............
