Worth a shot? Tacoma mulls gun 'drop boxes'

By Edmund DeMarchePublished September 09, 201

Gun control advocates in Tacoma, Wash., are thinking inside the box -- literally -- with a controversial proposal to set up a gun "drop box" to encourage residents to turn in firearms, no questions asked. The city of 203,000 has similar collection boxes for drugs, and officials say a secure, steel box can help get guns off the streets without subjecting nervous citizens to police interaction.

Dubious critics say a box full of guns could prove tempting to criminals -- and that's if people actually took the city up on the offer. "In other news: New Gun store for criminals opens in Tacoma called: The Drop Box," one person tweeted.

George Mason University economics professor Alex Tabarrok said those programs have been proven ineffective, and he predicted the same result for a drop box scheme. Anyone in the port city who wants to get rid of a gun discreetly, Taborrok said, has an easy option: toss it in Puget Sound.

I just read that. Gun control people are so far out of touch with reality that it is absolutely scary. Like one guy said in the article, people that want to get rid of a gun can just throw it in the Sound, or the lake, or a river.

This is a novel way for enterprising criminal to get guns.

Frank Abagnale, the master con artist the movie "Catch Me If You Can" is based on, once dressed up as a security guard and put a sign on a drop box in a airport that said "Drop box out of order. Give money bag to security guard". He then sat by the drop box and collected the bags that were give to him.

He said was amazed at how easy the scam worked as how can a Dropbox be out of order. All a bright guy would have to do is put a sign up or set up a phony dropbox for guns.

Soooo......they are just putting all these guns in one place, publicly advertising their where abouts.....and guarding them with a little bit of sheet metal and a cheap lock?

..what could go wrong?

Let's just cut through the BS and assume that a gun drop box is put in X location...Nervous Nellie takes a gun from wherever she gets it from and drops it in the box. Now, I'd she's nervous about it she most likely doesn't know how to check to see if it's loaded...So a good whack on a hammer and we have a negligent discharge, hopefully no death or injury. Just not a good idea.

Well, to be fair the one guy said it could be a box that goes into a building like the police station.

Many libraries have 'boxes' like this where you drop it off into a slot and it goes right into the the library.

However, if you're trying to be anonymous who'd want to walk in front of a police station where they are most likely on video?

A man with a brain. But Communists don't need a brain. They just need enough Marxists to follow them to eternity.

They've been doing this in the UK for a few years now with knives (about as regulated over there as guns are in NYC.)

So far, I doubt any of them have required emptying..

Leaving aside the issue of the box being a thief magnet, I shudder at the thought of dropping an old gun, in marginal condition and possibly loaded, onto a tangled-up pile of other such guns. I wouldn't want to be the person who had to empty that box.

That would probably be better for the environment too. I mean, think of all the pollution that driving those guns around do to the planet and the destruction of the guns too.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Drop box

And this will ruin the finish when "someone" unloads that Dropbox and snatches "one of the good ones" for personal use!

Stuff like this is so ignorant.
Whats the logic behind disarming law abiding citizens in favor of arming criminals.
Part of me feels helpless, being governed by such idiots..

Are uniform shops in Tacoma/Seattle sold out of security/police uniforms?

This was on the Fox News website a half hour ago, but the computers in the Hyatt Hotel Business Center (Appleton WI) blocked access to All gun websites.
Strange, even the computers in a downtown Madison WI hotel were not this rigid.

I don't see the issue, personally. I have the right to keep and bear firearms. You have the right "to not to" (best Mater voice from Cars). If someone ends up with one in their home, perhaps a widow, widower, parent of troubled-teen, and they want to get rid of it, why not? You and I (assuming we're the good guys) certainly won't take advantage of the drop boxes, but maybe someone who really shouldn't have a gun will. Flame-on.....

I am no genius but I can predict one thing

mor e guns on those streets as these boxes will provide thugs with new weapons-- what a bunch of morons to think this was a good idea

Not to mention that under WA's I-594, this could be considered an unlawful transfer depending on who receives the firearms.

guyfromohio: I don't think anyone is against people being able to dispose of guns if they wish, but many have issue with the inherent problems posed by a drop box subject to mischief, theft or worse. Anyone having a gun her or she doesn't want has some pretty solid options for disposal by surrender to a human being that can handle it/unload it safely. Most any police department will accept a surrendered firearm and many charities run anonymous 'buy backs' a few times a year. My logic is that people who want to dispose of a gun in such a fashion likely are unfamiliar with guns and wouldn't realize if they were about to toss a loaded weapon unsafely into the mix---or managed to chamber a round while trying to 'unload' it themselves.

I bet that the box will be monitored by a camera of sorts.
because well all know cameras are great at actively preventing crime......

once the guns are stolen, it really doesnt make a difference if we know who did it, the guns are already back on the streets by the time the guy gets caught.

This gives me an idea: if police can run gun buybacks, can't private citizens? What's stopping me from organizing an event where I buy back guns, no questions asked, to get them off the streets.

I'll pay $50 for any pistol, $75 for any long gun. Within a day, I'll have an epic collection of guns with history to show people.

"Yeah, so this here is my hi point that was used in a drive by, here's a Tec-9 from a bank robbery, oh, and this is a Raven MP-25 that was found next to a decapitated crack dealer. Pretty cool, huh?"
