This gives me an idea: if police can run gun buybacks, can't private citizens? What's stopping me from organizing an event where I buy back guns, no questions asked, to get them off the streets.

I'll pay $50 for any pistol, $75 for any long gun. Within a day, I'll have an epic collection of guns with history to show people.

"Yeah, so this here is my hi point that was used in a drive by, here's a Tec-9 from a bank robbery, oh, and this is a Raven MP-25 that was found next to a decapitated crack dealer. Pretty cool, huh?"
Depending on your state, there may be nothing stopping you. I'm not sure I'd want to invite charges like Theft by Receiving or Tampering with Evidence.

In the spirit of schools and TSA zero tolerance I propose the good people of Washington fill those boxes with everything that even has a picture of a gun or the letters NRA. Old gun magazines. NRA tshirts. Squirt guns. Fingernail clippers that have a feint whiff of hoppes

As others have alluded to, I can just see someone dropping a loaded, non drop safe gun in to the box (ie, Heritage Rough Rider) with disastrous results.

How 'bout sardines that have been marinated in hoppes? :D

As long as they hook a trailer hitch to that gun drop box, it sounds like a good idea to me.

Won't all of those gun shaped Pop Tarts attract raccoons?

That is so scary.

Past the potential hazard of telling someone to (often illegally) carry (what is generally an illegal) firearm on their person, in public, in crowded areas, securing these drop boxes would be next to impossible. They would be targeted by every criminal in town looking for guns, some of which are skilled thieves whom will have little issue defeating whatever countermeasures are in place to protect the drop container.

Further, the potential for just one of these units to yield a "big score" is going to attract more skilled criminals given just a single gun drop box heist could yield a huge profit.

Like that stops robberies where there are already cameras. At least at buybacks, you get a few bucks for that old top-break .32 that won't lock up.....

Agreed. Even if there were multiple alarm systems and the placement of the box was done strategically, the time it takes to defeat most locking containers will be faster than the time it takes for a response to get there.

We all know how government works and so if they head this thing up it seems unlikely that this drop container will be built to specs that makes it comparable to the most capable locking containers of our time (especially considering how rapidly the price will rise.)

Let's say that this box uses 1/4 inch steel plates as its main armor...a single skilled attacker with a single cordless tool could potentially defeat the armor in less than a minute. Even if the box uses 1/2 or 1 inch steel, the time it takes a skilled attacker to defeat it will be measured in minutes...not hours or days.

The contents of the locking container will attract these skilled criminals. The end result will likely be putting guns in the hands of even more violent offenders than we started off with. I would rate this plan as being on a quality grade that is comparable to the great idea of Fast & Furious, that has worked hard to ensure that our most violent offenders are well stocked in their weaponry reserves.

You know...if the drop box gets loaded up with gun-shapped Pop Tarts...and then just HAPPENS to be full of rats as a result...

Wouldn't that make for an exciting youtube video when it was opened for emptying?

A great place to get rid of your unused tinks 69 and other deer urine attractants. Perhaps a depository for dog walkers. They could never say anything to you as that would take away any anonymity that a turn in box would provide.

GuyfromOhio: The offensive part of this - and not toward you - is the utter futility of the thinking, the waste of taxpayer (i.e. MY) money to fund it. Frankly I'd prefer to see my tax money put to good use and pin-stripe the overpass abutments. One other thing as well; see below.

Were it privately funded, I probably wouldn't care, other than to regret the stupidity of some folks.

Of course, the leftists in power would soil themselves at the thought of 'all those guns' ending up in some non-governmental groups control. Sigh...

IronicIsn'tit: That's the 'other thing'. Bad guys will have yet another means of disposing of an inconvenient - incriminating - weapon or anything else of that nature without having to drive all the way over to Puget Sound. (Yes, I'm aware...)

It's not just for pop tarts anymore, how about an unwanted disposable diaper?

Perhaps if leftists were aware of themselves, they wouldn't be so dopey. Silly me! If leftists were self-aware, they wouldn't be leftists.
