I disagree here.

So, like a boomy 9mm with gas operation?:)
(Not really.;) A 14” 350L would be quite formidable.)

What about entirely goofy with an 8mm AR pistol?
Or more American as the 32ARC?
Or a little simpler as a 32x45?

If it’s the building and sourcing of parts and components that is fun, this would be a one of, bespoke rifle. Well, as an AR can get...:D
Not many AR extensioned, 32 caliber barrels out there.
Pistols bullets for varmints and plinking. Rifle bullets for longer use or larger game.

Probably won’t be very sale-able afterwards.
Except to me.;)
I kinda steer towards the odd one off stuff. Never thought about going BETWEEN 30 and 35 cal though... Interesting idea and easy enough to do with a lathe. Wish I hadn't sold mine. Hmmm

Since you don't really have an immediate need, and with ammo the way it is right now, I think a .22lr build makes more sense than ever. Though maybe that's because I'm currently in the middle of a .22lr precision build, and considering a second more lightweight build to mimic my HD carbine. My .223 hoard is slowly diminishing, but I have enough .22lr to last me 5-6 years at this point.

And being a bit of a rimfire proponent, I think a .22mag or even .17HMR build would be pretty cool, especially for something to dick around with at camp and plink rodents with.

8x33 kurtz! GL with ammo though lol!

I wonder how 300 Herrett (30 Herrett derivative [30-30 shortened] based on a shortened 308 win case for the xp100) necked up to 32 would do?

Or maybe a 50 beowulf necked down to 32

Personally, a 10mm with an 11” Macon Armory DI upper from Rudy would be sweet!

Not exactly a build your own unless you have the skills to mill the bolt face of a 6.8 SPC for Glock mags and turn down a barrel blank to allow for an extra short gas system. But maybe you do have the skills and means...

And a Glock patterned lower would be needed, I think Rudy has specific ones he likes.

Something about a true DI 10mm that gets me going.

I'm in the same boat OP, have several AR rifles, built a few, including a "daily driver" 5.56, 6.5 Grendel 20", 300 AAC pistol, 458 SOCOM, about to finish a 223 Wylde chambered rifle. I've decided on the next few I'm going to build and been buying parts, so far planning on a 300 AAC 16" rifle, 6.5 Grendel 16" "run and gun" rifle, yet another 5.56, and I've recently decided to build a 224 Valkyrie for varmint hunting fun and to really stretch out the 22 cal, and a 6mm Creedmoor since even now, every store I go to has a lot of 6mm ammo and components for some reason. I guess not many folks have adopted that one yet. Been wanting a 243 anyway and the 6mm Creedmoor seems to be a better compromise for ballistics and charge. Maybe think about those "outlier" calibers. Or you could build a 10mm 8.5" pistol, or a 7.62x39 pistol. Lots of options.

Yes please. And for a bit of simplicity, 6.8spc bolts should work. The only real question being how close to put a gas port, and how large that port should be. Of course there are other things to consider, but that’s the oversimplified version of it. The only thing that stops me is that 40sw barrels have a blowback barrel extension and 10mm barrels are pretty scarce. I would have no qualms about using a 6.8 barrel extension with a 40sw barrel that has been reamed to 10mm auto and ported at 2/3 pistol gas length with an adjustable gas block. I would go super short on gas system just because it’s a true pistol round and pressures will drop quickly so it will need some help, even if it does have considerable dwell time. At that point it’s all in getting a magazine to feed rounds reliably and tweaking buffer weight.

See I made it sound easy...

Rudy at Macon Armory has them figured out, and is reputable. He's more into 45acp but will do a one off 10mm here and there because he's done them in the past.

If I was going to build an AR not chambered for 5.56, it would probably be a .22lr. If it's just a truck gun/plinker/camp gun I would be pleased with a .22lr.

If I was planning on doing any hunting I would probably step it up to a 7.62x39. I know of a guy who specializes in them up the road from me. Strictly builds 762x39 AR's. Supposedly does really nice rifles and gets 100% reliability. I've seen some of his rifles, very nice. Green Mountain Carbine. Got out of the 762x39 cartridge years ago but if I hadn't I would have one of those AR's. It's also interesting that well into this ammo panic when you couldn't find anything for less than $600 a case, I was seeing cases of 762x39 fairly regular for between $300-$400, which was good compared to everything else.
