I'm looking for a few logic-based opinions to help walk me to a decision I need to make next month. Some of you may recall I've been talking about buying my only handgun next month, in January, which I planned to use as an EDC. Then the other day, I began looking more seriously at options for a hunting rifle, when a friend of mine proposed a series of hunts in 2012, most of which would take place in the Fall (coyote hunts would be the main exception, which could be at any point during the year). Here's my problem: I need to decide which firearm to buy first, and we'll assume my second firearm purchase of 2012 will take place in August, which is the most likely scenario. There is a small chance of getting three firearms in January (one is going to be my wife's EDC regardless of what I choose for myself), but I don't want to count on that. Two is a sure thing - one for me, one for my wife. My only currently-owned firearm is a 12 gauge shotgun for HD. If I get the handgun, I won't be able to carry it often, because I'm a full-time college student, and I also work 40 hours a week at my school. Combined, school and work account for a huge amount of my time. However, getting it would mean I have a backup HD weapon, and of course I'd carry when not at school or work. The school/work thing isn't likely to change for another year or so, possibly two. If I get the rifle, I know I'll have it available for any early-2012 hunts we do. If I make the rifle my second purchase, I may have to pass on some hunts, which would suck. I also enjoy shooting rifles at the range more than handguns, but the ammo is a good bit more expensive, which may very well end up being the limiting factor for how much shooting I do. Reloading isn't an option at this point, unfortunately. Which firearm would you buy in January if you were in my shoes? Edit: I meant to make this a poll with two options - either Buy the handgun first, and put the rifle off until August, or Buy the rifle first, and put the handgun off until August. Sorry about that.
