Can only afford one at this time. Considering the Kimber Custom TLE II or an AR-15 A2 carbine with 16 inch barrel. Don't own a 1911 or an AR-15 yet.

AR-15 would be my first rifle to own. Have shot rifles in the past.

Thoughts?

Being in CA, if I were given an opportunity to buy an AR, I'd be all over it (actually I'd get a HK 93 or G36, but that's another thread). Even 1911's are available in CA, so those can wait :)

Being in Texas, I don't have any restrictions except full auto. Convenience wise, the Kimber would get more use as there are more places to shoot it around me. No decent rifle ranges near me that allow FMJ. Would need to get the soft points.

Personally, I'd like to hand Ronnie Barrett a big pile of cash in exchange, but unless I win the lottery, that ain't happening anytime soon. On a more realistic level, I want a 3 inch N-frame S&W, used but in good shape. .357, .44 Sp., or .44 Mag. My target is the special. I'd like one of those monster .500 S&W mags, too (in the short barrel:D :what: ), but I'm still on the wrong side of the counter from them. A dang shame. In any case, I'm six months away from my next gun. Kid's in college. What can I say?

You could do worse than an AR for a first rifle, but I'd get a decent .22lr and shoot it some, unless you've shot rifles before, enough to skip this step. Lots of fun, very instructive when it comes to laying down serious cash in a bigger caliber, and everyone needs one anyway. Lots of good, accurate bolts and semi's out there. Wal-Mart always has some good deals on several brands. You can slip one of those in and still get an AR, if you shop around for the AR. If you have a good gun store around, they can be competitive, on the better-grade 22's that Wally World doesn't carry.
 
You & I are basically in the same boat. I too haven't invested in a good long gun because I know I won't use it much. I shoot all my guns at least once a month...I can't even remember the last time I fired a rifle.
Well, that said, I guess it's a no brainer then. Get the Kimber :D
 
Either would be nice. If you can afford either then I'd go with the one you'd get the most use out of.

If you wouldn't get to the rifle range much get the Kimber and get a cheaper rifle if you are in need of one (maybe an AK or SKS, they are cheap enough to justify for only occasional use). Remember most indoor pistol ranges don't allow rifle calibers. If you do most of your shooting at outdoor ranges, or if your indoor range also allows rifles, then...

If you can get to the rifle range as often as you want then get whichever you really want most.

One option is to buy a used Kimber or SA for the 1911 and maybe something similar to the AR but cheaper, maybe an AR 180. Maybe for the same money or a little bit more you can get both a 1911 and a decent rifle.
 
My vote would be for the 1911 first. Its more of a practical purchace for self defence. Then get the AR. Everyone needs one of those as well.

Then get another of each.
