I mentioned this in a different thread, but what I'd like to do is try and do some homemade sabot'ed rounds in a 375 Ruger. Would have to custom build to get the correct twist rate. 143 Gn 6.5mm ELDX with a .620 BC at 3500 fps? Sounds fun!

Probably not useful, accurate, or reasonable in any sense of the word. But definitely fun...and that's all the motivation I need.

I can shoot 100 yards from the heated comfort of my back kitchen door. But it might disturb the dog on the couch and the wife in her living room chair so I refrain.
The heated basement shop is where I can reload while listening to my Jimmy Buffet CD's instead ... ;)
I've been know to either open the rear door, or drop the top of one of the windows. Thanks to my son's wood harvesting project, we can shoot 200 yards from the house. I don't do it often, due to the neighbor's skittish horse being a hundred yards away, on the other side of the house. I do warn the wife before shooting though. (I don't want to have to clean the floor.)

I've actually been toying around with a 6.5mm Grendel rifle. I like the idea of enough oomph to get 600 - 1000 yds, a wide variety of high BC bullets (107gr., 123gr., etc.), holes large enough to see (vs. my 223 Rem 700), easy to reload, mild recoil, and some interesting rifles, especially the Howa Mini Action 1500. This would only be used to punch paper and steel.

That reminds me of a friend of mine. When I was going to college the guy who lived in the apartment next to me a Native American guy who was the head of wildfire fighting for the northern half of Minnesota. We used to BS and swap hunting and fishing stories. One saturday he sees me in the driveway and asks if I want to see his new pellet rifle. We go in his place and he had a fancy new break barrel pellet rifle with a scope on it and a tin of pellets sitting by the window. He got a couple beers and two kitchen chairs and we sat by the window taking turns shooting the pellet rifle out the window at a bunch of cans and things he had hung in the trees for about 4 hours while we swapped ice fishing stories. It was at least 20 degrees below zero outside with the window wide open the whole time so the furnace was surely getting a workout. Real nice guy and a real nice day.

That brings back memories. When I lived in central NY state, I used to knock squirrels off the bird feeders in the back yard with a Beeman R7 shooting out the window from our dining room table.

Let's see...
Work up some loads for my:
30-40 Krag - 125 gr Noslers
264 WM - just because
308 - Trying out some 150 gr and some 172 gr loads for s&g's
223 Bolt - something in the 50-55 gr range
5.56 DDM4V7 - Something that will shoot well (ok, better than) what I've got now.
I think that's it.

Speaking of bird feeders, I once saw a video of a squirrel running along the top of a porch railing, then started to eat something on a small platform. The guy was apparently inside the window and released a clay target thrower that heaved that squirrel about 40 yards!

I've spent a good year trying to get the RCBS 6.5-140-SILH to run favorably in my Savage 11 .260 with Unique. Just when I get close to 1.5 moa there's always some crazy flyer several inches out.

I think that this will be the year of the 6.5 CM. I have a Ruger 77 with a 26" barrel that I have not yet sorted out. But a 26" barrel is awfully inconvenient for hunting in brushy country. Since I want to hunt with a 6.5 CM, I just acquired a new TC Venture in 6.5 CM with a 22".

It is going to be interesting to see which of the two is more accurate. Given the performance I got from the TC Icon 243, I am guessing that the Venture will be a real tack driver.

BTW, before seeing this thread, I never thought of flying squirrels as game animals...
