Next rifle/ammo testing you're thinking about?

Right now I am holding onto my dollars because my wife wants a new bicycle (no, it is not a cheap bike). After that I am looking at the .22TCM rifle. No, I don't know why, I just think it would be in interesting round to load.

Either that or I have been in correspondence with a member here who has a two-band Enfield for sale. . .

That rifle buttstock seems to have a lot of drop for scope use.

Will be my new 224 valkyrie upper by craddock precision. Will begin with factory ammo and handload 80gr eld. It shipped today.

I've got about 4 boxes of 223 50 grain Nosler ballistic tips sitting on the shelf. I'll start working up a coyote load for my Ar.

My main testing is going to be with my savage 111 30-06. I want to work up a 180 grain handled for hunting, and compare that to whatever 180 grain factory ammo I have laying around, to see what I’ll be running in that gun come bear and cougar season. I’m also going to see how much shooting it from sling supported positions changes the point of aim. If I’m lucky, there won’t be enough of a difference for me to have to get a new stock.

More 35 Whelen rounds down range

More 150 Federal Fusion rounds through my SAKO to determine if the low velocities I saw over my chronograph were real or not

See if cast bullets loaded at 45/70 levels will shoot in a 458 Win Magnum

From what I have read in the in-print press, (and they are of course, the experts) 30-30 Win bullets will just bounce off deer, bunny rabbits, etc, so, tree rats, beware!, if the 405 grain bullet does not kill you, the tree falling on your rodent body, will.

And if that does not get them, then we are going to the big guns:

How do you like the 35 Whelen? And when do you use that instead of the 30-06? I definitely don’t need one, but I think they are cool as all get out.

Nowhere near ready yet, but I just ordered a JGS reamer in 6mm Super Long Range and coordinated with Southern Precision to use it to chamber a Bartlein 5R in 7.5" twist for my Ruger RPR. Soon as the reamer arrives it's being shipped off. Plan on having the barrel completed and mounted sometime around May.

JT-AR-MG42, color me 50 shades of intrigued ;) I've got an AK that I've been itching to out a scout scope on and do some hunting with. What kind of game where you planning on hunting with you're SKS? And where are you doing the hunting? I've noticed the same critters are a heck of a lot bigger in some parts of the country than others.

Hasaf, I'm with you onthe 22TCM. I have zero idea what I'm going to do with one (maybe small game hunting in firearms restricted areas? Cause the Johnson family crest reads "overkill is under rated") but it seems like way too cool of a round to pass up, either in a 1911 or a bolt gun (although I think a lever gun might be an excellent plinker and smaller ish game gun)

Rule 37- There is no "overkill". There is only "open fire" and "time to reload".
;)

It's not overkill. I'm checking the barrel for "heat-walk"!
Which is exactly what I plan to do, one month from now. Hopefully. I will shoot before then, but it will be nice to more "serious" shooting. I can kill only so many Snowmen before I lose the will to hunt them.:)

I have a four fifty Bushmaster that is not ejecting properly. But this can't wait until spring! I should have given the reviews more weight. I will know more about the AR system after I am done though, so win, win.

It's hard winter in Maine now, but I'm thinking of getting out when the weather is warmer to test some new loads & factory ammo.
I know the feeling as Cleveland in NE Ohio is not much better. My outdoor range is snow and ice covered and not very inviting. I went out to the garage this morning and started my bike just to hear it run and cabin fever has really set in. Last summer I did some volumetric test on five flavors of .308 Winchester. I collected data on all 50 cases and never did get to load them and shoot them over the chronograph and see how things group. That is my first goal when this frozen tundra thaws.

You guys, all live too far south. If you lived farther north there would be more fun things to do and you would get out more in the winter.

Ha ha. I get out, but being retired and turning 74 next week, it's not as much fun outdoors in winter as it used to be. Not only that, but I have lots of time to spend loading ammo and working on my guns.

I can shoot 100 yards from the heated comfort of my back kitchen door. But it might disturb the dog on the couch and the wife in her living room chair so I refrain.
The heated basement shop is where I can reload while listening to my Jimmy Buffet CD's instead ... ;)

Like LoonWulf I’ve got loads to work up for a new rifle. His is a 375 Ruger. Mine are 375 H&H. But I suspect we will both have fun.

I've been interested in a 375 Ruger since I heard of the cartridge. I just have absolutely no need for that kind of power given my situation. Sure would be fun to play with, though.

You're in Texas... just decide that you need a gun for bigfoot, and you will find your justification ;)

also, can't you hunt some exotics on private land down there?

I think a 375 ruger downloaded with a 270 to about 2200 fps would be a nice deer thumper. I've actually always wanted a 9.3x62 for the same purpose. Kind of like a 2x scale 30-30 bolt gun.

Firing my Krags now that brass is back available and I am set up to reload it. Want to play around using loads with long heavy 220 gr lead bullets.

Yes, I could download a 375. That would, of course, make it redundant with other guns in the safe. Still, it would be fun ...
