If our planetary civilization is not smashed by forces external or our the hand of our own species, I suspect it will settle into several super states that are primarily based on continental proximity. Those states will wage proxy wars in unassimilated regions like Africa, South America and inner Asia. Those wars will contine until somebody does something REALLY stupid and causes a lot of damage. The survivors will realize the folly of fighting in the family with our toys, then start looking for somebody off planet to pick fights with.

Interesting theory jlbraun, and thanks for introducing me to the word "adhocracy". I don't know about online groups sponsoring takeovers in the real world, but at the least there are going to be some serious issues arising from the fact that online transactions can be essentially uncontrollable when implemented properly, so there is the potential for a significant online untaxable economy.

The problem with the internet and all of these online economies is that various organizations are lobbying to eliminate "net neutrality." Without NN an ISP (or government) has no legal obligation to provide access to all materials and data on the internet. They can censor what they want and restrict access and transactions.

well some where down the road there is going to be a big war. the world will end as we know it and all the survivors will just drift through whats left of the world forming small colonies and trading to survive. i think i seen a movie like that once hmmm.

seriously, we'll see attempts at world governments but unless there is someone THAT charismatic to pull it off, it will just end up with hemispheric combat.

Charisma can be bought and puppets can be figureheads. All that is needed to conquer the world is to sieze all or most of the mass media in the world. That way whomever had it would have the power of suggestion, the power of scrutiny, the power of repetition, the power of censorship and the power of smear.
With those powers manipulating existing politicians and installing their own is rather easy. The confused and disinformed masses wouldn't know how to oppose them.
