NFA barrel length?

What would I have to do to get an Ar-15 with a barrel length under the 16'' standard. Like something like a 14.5 in bbl. I know I would need to have a class 3 permit and all but how would I legally be able to build/purchase one without an LE or military ID.
 
atf.gov has a FAQ about it in their firearms section.
 
If you want to build an SBR why pay the extra money for 1.5" less barrel? You could just buy an AR with a 14.5" barrel and a permanently attached flash hider.
 
Thats true. never thought of that. I'm new to the whole rifle thing so I want to know what is legal and what is not. I am also looking for a new AR for my 18th birthday and I prefer the smaller carbine length like around and M1 length

Doesn't matter anyway then, you can't have an NFA weapon until you are 21.
 
The standard barrel length is 20", not 16". In any case, you need to look into how Florida deals with NFA firearms. MG's are out. A short rifle may not be.

18-20 year olds may make NFA items on a F1 or procure them from non-FFL's on an F4. They simply have to check the yes box to the age question, and attach a brief explanation.

MG's are legal in florida, so long as they are registered properly, though you are statuatorily prohibited from using one as a ccw piece.
 
16" is the minimum non-NFA length.

However, a 14.5" barrel with a permanently attached Smith Vortex flash suppressor is 16.1", and therefore non-NFA legal. You will lose some velocity compared to a 16" barrel, though.

Wrong. I started collecting NFA items at 19. :) You just can't buy from a dealer until 21 - but F1s and private party in-state F4s are a-ok!

Interesting. Has that changed? I tried to buy several MG's before I turned 21 and I was turned down. Had to get my dad to put them in a trust and make me an officer. That was for stuff on both a Form 3 and 4. Never tried a 1 at the time. Guess it was dealer transfers that I couldn't get done.
 
Dealers and manufacturers can't sell to 18-20yo, but you can private party F4 or F1 build one yourself.

If they were on an F3, (and transfered to your dad's trust on an F4) they were definetely registered to an SOT, so he couldn't sell it to you. If they were on an F4, they may have been registered to a licensee or a non-licensee. If they were a licensee, they couldn't sell to you if they wanted to.

I will say, that as worded, the age question on the form, leads one to believe that you have to be 21 to own an NFA item. And, many folks don't realize how an 18-20 y/o may legally own one.

im thinking about buying a really cheap 20ga sxs and chopping it down to about an 10 inch barrel
