Okay, all of you keep saying you've "checked the status" of your Forms... uh, how do you do that?

Are you calling NFA branch directly?

Or is there some secret super-useful automated website out there you're using?

I did two SBRs in less than 2 months last year, but now a single Can is taking over 6 months... I'm starting to get grumpy about how long this is taking.

But I really don't want to call and slow them down anymore than they may already be. Is that what all of you are doing?

i've heard a number of people say 120 days or so is pretty common at the moment. 6 mo is too long. go to atf.gov and look up the firearms branch number. iirc, you'll need to give them your last name so they can send you to the right examiner (they're organized by last name). then you just talk to them.

Call 304-616-4500. Tell the receptionist that you would like to enquire on the status of Form 1 or 4. (s)he will ask you for the serial number. They will check the computer and tell you it is 1. not in the system 2. pending 3. approved (and the date). If it is pending, they will tell you who your examiner is and ask you if you want to speak to them. Unless you want to take yopur examiner away from his work and slow your paperwork down, you will graciously decline- unless you really need to speak with the examiner. Before they release details of a pending (or better) application, they may ask to confirm your name (if purchased by an entity, give them your name, position and the entities name: ie. "This is John Smith, Grantor and Trustee of the John Smith Trust.") and firearm type

(they're organized by last name)
At present, NFA Branch is using a slightly more randomized system, assigning applications to examiners based on workload. Presumably, they will go back to the name method.

Also, remember (even when they are sorted by name), transfers are based on your examiners last name (or the first letter of the entity name if it is registered to something other than an individual).

But I really don't want to call and slow them down anymore than they may already be.
The receptionist that answers your call exclusively transfers calls to examiners, answers status inquiries, and other questions. You won't slow-up the applications any.

My suppressor is taking that long too. You're not the only one. I called NFA a week or two ago and the guy said they are REALLY swamped. Though, I did receive a call last week saying my dealer forgot to file a piece of paper with them (corrected that the DAY they called). :cuss:

I sent my paperwork in during the last week of May. It went pending in the last week of July. Still haven't gotten it.
