Wht do you think is a good price for one? I got a guy askin $900. Any first hand experience with them

$900 seems to be about the average asking price these days. It is probably one of the best built, most accurate AK type rifles ever built. Milled receiver and heavy chrome lined barrel, 100% built in China and not rebuilt stateside from parts. Just be aware that if you decide you want to put a conventional pistol grip on it you will need to replace some original parts with US built ones for 922r compliance.

The NHM-91 uses a 1.5mm stamped reciever and has a 21" CL barrel (The manual for mine says it's a "National Match" barrel... LOL). In reality its basically a Chinese RPK with a thumbhole stock on it.

I have owned my NHM-91 since 1995 when I bought it brand new. $279.00 with (3) round back 30 rnd mags, (2) shorter 10rnd mags, adjustable bi-pod, sling and cleaning kit.

Mine had a barrel nut protector that was not welded. It also had a rivet head on the bottom of the magwell at the catch so 30rnd mags wouldn't fit until you removed it.... The orginal handguard and gas tube cover were unvented and were stained with a dull golden yellowish varnish - not the bright orange/red color most Chinese guns were known for at the time.

I put a US made AK74 style brake on it and the factory thumbhole stock cracked at the tang so I changed the stock/handguards to a nicer looking set off a friends NHM-90 (16 barrel gun) and I I refinished them to a dark walnut stain....

Kinda wish I hadn't screwed with it now but back then these guns were really cheap and no one thought they would ever be anthing special.

Its a great rifle. One of the best civillian AK's ever offered for sale in the US.... but I am still amazed at what they sell for these days. I have seen many sell in the $800-$900 range.

I can't speak to the asking price without knowing the condition of the rifle. $900 seems a touch high unless it's in good shape. But given the still current, high anxiety over semi-auto military style rifles, and the fact that these rifles are uncommon to begin with, and not imported any more, you may want to snag it.

My NHM-91 was imported in 1993, but I bought it used about 18 months ago, just before the CT school shooting, for $499. It's no tack driver, about 5" groups at 100 yards is normal with steel, though I can get better with hand loads. I put an AMD-65 brake on it, and it's very fun to shoot, bump-fires easily, and I've never had any kind of malfunction with it.

You'll get some stares at the range because: 1, it's the 'enemy's' rifle of choice; or, 2, because a lot of AK guys are not familiar with the NHM-91, and sometimes make comments about the barrel length.
