So I bounded all day around eastern Laramie county (WY) thinking that I'd thin out some of the cotton tail/jack rabbit population today. Was out there from about 8 to 5.

Sun shining, slight breeze, and just being outside for the first time in a long while made it a good day overall. However, it seemed like every good spot that I'd find were just plain abandoned. Lots of burrows, not just cotton tail ones but all sorts like groundhog and badger, but no tracks or any even relatively recent signs of life (except for all stuff I couldn't catch!)

Only thing that I managed to catch was a cactus that I didn't notice on my leg which I swatted without thought (doh!).

Oh well, it could always be worse I guess.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else was having any better luck than I've been having as of late. Also, I was hoping that a Wyoming THR'er could give me a few pointers on where to go for a better haul next time.

It's called "Hunting", not "Killing" - if success is only measured by the contents of the game bag and not the total experience, something is amiss...... ;)

Well admitedly the foodie side of me kicked in something harsh when I found a relatively simple version of jugged hare.

Now you all know my deep dark secret. :p

The season is for cottontails, runs from 1st of September till 28th of Feburary.
However, Wyoming Game and Fish has classified jack rabbits in the same lot with coyotes so they can be hunted year round.

They all have their cycles. Population levels fluctuate over the course of several years. Might want to check with your local Wildlife Agency to see where things currently stand. Then again who knows? Next time try another location and you might be sayin Eureka!

Best of luck!

That's not a bad idea at all cottswald!
I hit up the areas that I could around alfalfa fields today since they've been harvesting lately but I suppose I'll try out the forests to the west next time.

Some states have a year-round season on rabbits. I've heard that thing about tularemia and frost, but the thing is, where I live ... first frost rarely happens, and if it does, it's in January or February.
