Hi folks, I wanted to get some feed back on the NICS VAF process... (See Below...)

http://www.atf.gov/press/releases/2004/12/121504-openletter-ffl-fbi-nics.pdf

I am in the process of purchasing a new gun (Yeah Me!!) and in talking with the FFL I mentioned to him that I will likely need to make two trips to his shop as I ALWAYS get delayed. I attributed the delays to the fact that I get a lot of EMS/FD training and have a criminal BG check done at a minimum of 3 times a year. I liken it to your credit score being effected by credit checks.

Anyway, the dealer suggested this may help. Does anyone here do this?

I am a little suspect to letting them put my on yet another list.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Unless you are terribly inconvenienced by two separate trips to your dealer, I wouldnt bother obtaining a UPIN. They will keep you on file as opposed to a simple NICS check where they're supposed to discard your info.

I am not terribly invonvenienced except for the rare times I have to travel to make the purchase (2.5 Hours in this case...) and I will have to make two trips. I wish there were a way to do the initial NICS check over the phone.

I have had my UPIN for about 2 years now. My first purcahse was a denial but was easily appealed after 1 week. My next 3 purchases ended up with delays to the next morning. I hated the waiting and always wanted my toys NOW. I applied for my UPIN which involved finerprintings at the Sherriff's department. I forget if I had to pay anything. I received the UPIN in less than 2 weeks. SInce then I have had no delays and have always walked out of the store minutes after calling in to NICS.

I got lucky today. They always say "Further Research" and it ends up being a delay. I guess today they were not so busy because they came back with a proceed in a couple of minutes. Maybe the rush has slowed. Prices are sure coming down! I found a Saiga, new for $339.... not like they were a few year ago, but better that they have been the last couple of years.

I may apply for it though anyway. I am not too concerned that they will have me on file. I do not believe for a minute that purchases made are not tracked to begin with.
