I've bought or otherwise accepted transfer of roughly 200 firearms over the years since NICS. I've noticed some odd patterns I'm hoping folks might be able to shed light on. First of all, as a consistent matter every time I include my SSN I am delayed. EVERY time. A dealer did not believe me so we tested it with my next purchases and sure enough, I was delayed with the SSN and proceeded without it. But on the last few I've been delayed without my SSN. The only thing I know of that's changed is I had to put fingerprints on file for a state license. Is it possible this has put me bag into the "delay" bag?

That is kind of odd, generally you are more likely to get delayed for not providing you SSN if someone with a sketchy past has a similar name or something.

My solution:

I write 'REFUSED" on all 4473's and also do not provide it on license applications.
No denials; no delays. ;)

You might get a copy of your credit report and see if anyone else's name shows up as an AKA. Outside chance, but more probably just gubmint ineptitude.

I always provide my SSN, although I am not thrilled about it. I was delayed (never refused) consistently also, until the last year or so. I was delayed last year in Atlanta on an out of state rifle purchase, but it may have been due to a local deal.

I suspected someone, with the same name, had been convicted of a felony.

Maybe you've reached that magic number of firearms where Big Brother actually is watching YOU!

I used to be delayed until I started giving my SS#.

I do know of one peron who's name is one letter of from mine.

I knew him 25 years ago and I'm sure he's killed someone by now

I include my SSN and never came across this delay. Another guy at the store got the delay treatment one day but I didn't have the information on if he did the optional SSN box or not.
