All,
I am looking for a 9mm with an accessory rail to keep in the safe in my room. Right now I have a Ruger Blackhawk .357 in there but I'd like to get something with a light. I have been a CZ guy for a while so naturally you'd think I'd go for the P07 or the P01. I already own the 75 B, 75 Compact, 2075 RAMI, and the 83 so I am pretty comfortable with the controls and layout. The problem is, I live in California. I haven't seen a P01 in two years and the P07 is not on the California Handgun List. http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/
Here is what Buds has that works for CA: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/1153/California+Compliant

I've thought about a few guns but here is what I'd like:
Must have:
1. A rail
2. 9mm
3. Less than (or close to) $500
4. California Legal

Would prefer:
1. DA/SA
2. Layout similar to CZ
3. New

Right now I'm thinking about either a Sig SP2022, a Ruger SR9c, or maybe a Springfield XD. The Sig is closest to my requirements. Is there anything else I should think about or look at?
Please do not reply, "Move out of California." Thanks for your consideration and thoughts.

LOL, that would be MY first choice, not realistic but funny. I may have a change of heart in a month or two when the snow is 3 feet deep. (LOL)

But I am a smoker and CA is not smoke friendly, been there.

Seriouly though my choice would be the Sig 229, not sure on the price but should do you well.

This was my choice, but I don't think you will see these in CA. You could do a special order from CZ-Custon Shop for one with 10 round mags.

CZCustom has P-01's in stock. I think they still have some in olive drab green if that trips your trigger. You might give them a call and see if they could put together a package with Cali-approved reduced capacity magazines.

Otherwise, I have a Sig P228 that's an excellent gun and the P229's are pretty nice too (although the ones I shot had more muzzle flip, probably due to the E2 grip). I'd say go out and try to rent a few of those - shouldn't be too hard to find a range with Sig's, Rugers, XD's, etc., and see which one you like.

I just got my first nine, a Springfield XD. I love it, it hasn't malfunctioned yet (only about 1000 rounds so far, though) and it's very accurate. Of course I am inherently inaccurate... I get one hole groups at 5 yards and 1" at 7-10. I like the feel too, but that's a personal thing. T'was $415.00

Are any of the EAA Witness pistols available in CA? They're basically CZ clones, although just a touch larger.

I have the sig pro 2022 in 40. I like it a lot! After about a thousand rounds the slide wouldn't lock back once the mag was empty. I sent it back and they fixed and shipped it back to me in under a week.

I traded my PCR (because of the trigger sting) for a Ruger SR9C and I like it in hand as much as the PCR. It's a nice gun for the money. I also am quite close to my XD9, so I'm afraid I'm not much help except to tell you you can't go wrong with either one. Can't comment on the Sig since I don't like the fit even though they are fine guns.

It's not that difficult to install a new trigger in the PCR. I've felt some trigger sting from the newer, thinner triggers, but the original 85C trigger has never bothered me. Hardest part about installing it is seating the trigger return spring, and even that's pretty easy. Some needle noise pliers and a 1.5mm punch are all you need.

Be wary of compacts. I have a M&P9C, which has an accessory rail, but the flashlight I own (streamlight TLR-1) will not fit on it.

The Ruger SR9 would be a nice way to go except that it's striker fired. However, it's a good shooting slim gun.

I used to keep a .357 next to bed myself, but switched over to .45apc because i would hate to blind and deafen myself THAT much with the .357 when 13 rounds of 230gr should do the job as well.

I use my SIG 2022 (9mm) for exactly that purpose. Given my circumstances, I wanted my night time "stand by to repel boarders" gun to have a longer , heavier pull than you typically find on the striker fired pistols. The 2022 fills this role very well, is accurate and has an accessory rail if I want to use it.

Same here!

If its going to be a nighstand gun, why pick a lightweight alloy, compact? How about the all steel CZ SP-01. Order one from CZ Custom or other on line provider. You are really limited to ten round mags in CA? Really?

Why do you need a light rail? Flashlights work too.

Thanks everyone for your good, thoughtful responses. I noticed a mention of the PX4 on another thread. I should probably take a look at that one, too. The post about lights, flashlights, etc. was also good food for thought. Thanks again.

I believe Buds has CZ P-01's in stock as well, though I think they have them for about 550ish. I bought one from Topgunsupply a couple of years ago and I think they regularly stock them.

My choice

Of the three you mentioned, I have a SPRINGFIELD ARMORY XD Sub Compact and like it a lot. I prefer it to the GLOCK for the extra safety and better ergonomics, at least for me.
It has proven to be quite controlable and very reliable.

If you do not mind a large gun, BERETTA is now making the M9A1. This is the BERETTA 92 version used by the Marines. It is a standard size model 92 with a light rail. If you like the BERETTA 92, it is a good choice.

That's why we have so many excellent marksmen here - we gotta make 'em count!
