Two 3-9x40s on hunting rifles, both work well. No experience at the range you are asking about.
Thanks! As I wrote the difference in quality was indistinguishable for me with either the VX-2 or 3 or any of the Bushnell or Burris scopes. I did not evaluate the others, but I did find that the VX-3i was noticeably sharper than the Prostaff. I have already decided that's going to be my next scope.A short list for me would be:
VX-2, VX-3, MeoPro, Bushnell Elite 3500 and 4500, Minox ZV 3, Sightron Big Sky and Zeiss Terra, Burris C4 and Cabela's Euro Instinct.

Cabela's Euro Instinct was also an improvement, less so than the VX-3i, but it's also considerably more expensive than Nikon.That is what puts their prices in a different category: much more expensive than the Prostaff.
