I just stopped at the gun shop an they had some nitro 100nf but I don't have that in quickload so I was wondering how it compares to the old stuff. Did the formula really change or was it a rebranding thing.

The little bit of data I have seen suggests it is slightly different. Off hand I do not remember whether it was faster or slower.

The Western Powders website doesn't specifically address whether its faster or slower burning, but I do believe its a faster burning powder now. But yes it does appear that the new formula is definitely different. The old version was extruded flake powder and the new version is a flattened ball, due to new sourcing. The quote below is directly from their website: http://www.accuratepowder.com/faq/
5. What is the background behind “New Formulation” Nitro 100?
We unfortunately had to change the manufacturer for Nitro 100 early in 2009.

This was due to factors outside our control.

We thus do not source our Nitro 100 for the EU (Czech Rep) anymore.

It’s now made in the USA by General Dynamics®.

It’s still a double base powder but it’s a flattened spherical (ball) powder instead of the original extruded flake design.

Since our first priority was for 12ga shotgun application, the new powder is a more optimized powder for light shot loads.

In a 12gauge the loads for the light ? oz and 1oz will very much the same or be slightly higher than the old style N100.

Special note re 1?oz loads

For heavier 1?oz loads the N100 NF will not be as flexible and versatile as the old N100. The best performance with the smaller volume taper cases such as WAA® and Remington STS® will be 1150 fps with Pressures of between 11000 Psi to 11500 Psi.

However, in the larger volume “straight case” designs, such as Federal® and Fiocchi® it will be possible to achieve 1200 Fps, with pressures in the 11000Psi range, in combination with the proper wads.

We are constantly busy compiling load data which will be available as time progress.

The powder flows better resulting in “VMD” bushing data will also be different, see the data for the MEC® bushings below

Handgun Calibers:

There was am initial caution/warning re handgun calibers however, that was just a prelim measure because the handgun data will be different. We are in process of developing loads for this powder in handgun calibers.

For the interim we suggest a reduction of - 10% for both the start and maximum loads relative to any old original Nitro100 data.

The new formulation is so different from the old powder that it shouldn't even be called Nitro 100. No longer a flake powder, it's now a flatten spherical. It's faster, denser and the load data had to be rewritten for pistols. Formally made in the Czech Republic it's now manufactured in Florida.
Does this makeover mean it's inferior to it's predecessor....not necessarily.
Nitro was developed and used mostly by shot gunners. It never had a strong following with pistol reloaders. Scots created Nitro 100 but Accurate bought them out 20 years ago. In 2004 Western Powder bought Accurate.
I'm still have 2 lbs left of the old Scots and it works great in 45ACP. The Accurate branded Nitro works almost as well.
Maybe I'll try the NF Nitro when my stock runs out....although it won't be the same.

Nitro 100 powders

I have and used both new and old 2000 mfg nitro 100. The New version is faster. But the older SCOTS version is better for me because it is bulkier and hard to double charge 9mm and 45acp loads without noteing it. and I was lucky enough to purchase 4- 8lb. jugs of the old version a few years ago. Just before Accurate Arms moved from TN.

I also got SCOTS 1250 and SOLO 1000. I am set for life with powder for reloading. And have worked up loads using all of the SCOTS powders.

If you find some NITRO 100 OLD VERSION BUY IT. Great Powder.

I've been playing with some Nitro100nf in 147gr 9mm reduced recoil loads. It works extremely well for this task. POA/POI accuracy at 50ft is excellent. It is the mildest recoiling 9mm load that I have been able to create that still reliably cycles that actions of all my pistols. It also leaves cases surprisingly clean.
