A little backstory:

I'm a relatively new firearms owner. Picked my first one up 2 years ago. I absolutely adore the sport and hobby. I shot before(in the Army and as a kid) but had never purchased anything. In the two years since, I've been thru a number of firearms and have started reloading as well. I currently reload 9mm, 357, 45, 44, and 300BLK.

Here's the thing, I really want to try my hand at hunting. At 45 years old, I'd like to get in the woods and see how I do. In NJ, we have a pretty short deer season and it, unfortunately, coincides with my busy season at work which really puts a damper on getting in the woods. Additionally, we are not allowed to hunt deer with centerfire rifles, only muzzle loaders(no interest) and shotguns. And no, no handguns either.

So, I'm contemplating a pig hunt. Unfortunately I don't know a thing about where to go or when. I am also wondering about caliber choice. I would imagine that 45acp is a bit too weak from a handgun. I do have a 44 revolver as well as a 357 carbine or my 300BLK. I don't really want to add another caliber to my safe at this time.

So, in essence, I am looking for :

1) Suggestions on where/when to go on a piggy hunt
2) What caliber to bring

Also, I would like to keep it to a reasonable driving distance from me in NJ. Nothing further south that the Carolina's.

Thanks in advance.

Christopher

There are farms to hunt boar out in PA. Here's one:

I'm not sure if you are in North or South NJ. If you are in North NJ it wouldn't be a bad ride at all, it's not too far past Scranton PA I believe (don't quote me on that). I've never hunted boar with any of the calibers you mentioned but I'd be willing to bet your 300BLK would be fine (just no sub-sonic rounds). I've hunted them with a 30-30 and had no issues.
