He may be a politician, but this was pretty cool: http://www.freenewmexican.com/news/42625.html

I actually spoke to him about doing this at dinner (my wife's a bigwig) about a year ago - I'm sort of amazed that he followed through! :)

Governor gets license to pack

By DAVID MILES | The New Mexican
April 22, 2006

Legislators and lobbyists beware — Gov. Bill Richardson has just received a license to carry a concealed handgun.

Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said the governor picked up his license at Friday’s dedication of expanded facilities at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy on the city’s south side.

The governor successfully completed all the requirements for obtaining a license, including a criminal background check and a firearms-training course, Gallegos said. “He aced the test,” the spokesman said.

Richardson owns a GLOCK pistol, Gallegos said. But Richardson’s veto pen likely will remain his most dangerous weapon around the Roundhouse because the governor says he doesn’t plan to pack heat.

Richardson, who describes himself as an avid hunter, said he applied for the license to lend his support to concealed-carry measures. “I just wanted to symbolically show my support for concealed carry,” he said. “I don’t anticipate carrying one.”

Richardson, who was flanked by state police officers from his security detail during an interview Friday, said personal safety wasn’t a factor in his decision to apply for a concealed-handgun license.

In 2003, Richardson signed into law a measure letting New Mexicans apply for licenses to carry concealed, loaded handguns. Requirements for applicants include completing a firearms-training course of at least 15 hours and submitting a $100 application fee and fingerprints for a criminal background check.

The law bars convicted felons, those judged to be mentally incompetent, alcoholics and drug addicts from receiving a concealed-handgun license. The prohibition also applies to people under indictment for felonies and those who have been convicted of certain misdemeanors related to violence, drunken driving or drug abuse.

Last year, Richardson signed another law lowering the minimum age of license applicants from 25 to 21 and extending the term of the license from two years to four years. The 2005 law also requires a two-hour refresher-firearms course two years after receiving a new or renewed license.

In addition to receiving his new concealed-handgun license, Richardson applied this year for a license to hunt elk. “I’m a hunter; I’m a sportsman,” he said Friday.

whoopee. Dem Gov shill, makes mouth noises and declares a 'border emergency' then doesn't do a damned thing about it, just like the Dem gov of Arizona who just vetoed a piece of finance legislation that was in response to her own false noise about defending the border.

Richardson will be talking about 'threats to my person' in a quick minute, as soon as he gets any negative heat for it from Democrats.

Context means a lot, and his severely taints any positive value of his exercising his CCW option.

Well, this is far far better than him insisting that CCW laws will result in more murders and shootouts in the streets as so many other politicians have claimed.

(Trying to be more of a "glass half-full" type of guy, and less cynical.)

Legislators and lobbyists beware

I hate when they start out articles like that. As if the governor is now a threat because he can legally carry concealed now.

Bill "jackass" Richardson can kiss my donkey. Nothing he does is without an agenda. If he got a CCW, it was only because he thought that it would gain him some votes. The man is a vote pandering whore of the highest order. :barf:

The good governor is a likely contender for a spot on the Democrat ticket in '08. None other than Clintoon hisself said the Democrat's stand on gun control cost em the last election. Not sure I believe it but I'll take responsibility.

It is a no-brainer for a Democrat governor to "see the light" and embrace firearms beyond hunting.

Cynical electioneering and nothing more.

Too bad he didn't have the political courage to say he would carry it.

If I were the bodyguard in charge of the Governor's safety, I wouldn't let him carry it either, and not because of competency (or Glock) issues. If there is danger I want the man I'm guarding to duck and hide, and go where I tell him-not to engage in a shootout. From that perspective, the Governor's life is more valuable than mine, and I want him the hell out of the way.

That said, if I were the Governor, I'd carry something small and concealable (like a Colt 1908 or a .32 NAA, in case I ran out of bodyguards :D ), and just not tell anyone who doesn't need to know.

Yeah, my heart bleeds for you. Your Governor not only signed a carry law but also got a carry permit, which he stated publicly that he did for no other reason than to show his support for your right to carry.

My Governor says nobody needs a gun, let's ban 'em all. His Republican opponent tried to go as long as she could without saying anything at all. When finally pressed on an assault weapons ban, she said "The problem is how you define an assault weapon. You could call a rolling pin an assault weapon if you wanted to think of it that way."

Now he's got a TV commercial running (yes, he's already running at least three different TV commercials for the fall election) that shows her saying that and then sums up "Judy Baar Topinka is against the Assault Weapons Ban because she thinks it's a ban on rolling pins? WHAT IS SHE THINKING?"
