No .45 Colt Mountain Gun for Nightcrawler

Went to the local Gander Mountain today, asking about .45 Colt S&W revolvers. I got my hopes up when the clerk said that Smith was still making the Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. However, when he looked through his big book of guns they can order, he and I were both dismayed to find that item no longer listed. It's no longer at Smith & Wesson's website, either, and has apparently been discontinued.

Said that a Ruger Redhawk, 5.5", .45 Colt will run me about $600. It was about the same price for a .454 7.5" Super Redhawk.

I examined the SRH. It was big and mean looking, but lighter than it looked. Not what I'm looking, for, unless I could get one cut down like Wildalaska was showing off before.

So, looks like the only NEW full sized, 6-shot .45 Colt revolver I'm going to be able to get my hands on is the Redhawk. A good gun, I'm sure, but not pretty, and easy to tote like a 4" N-Frame.

As much as I badmouth S&W because of their politics and the key lock, I think they are really dropping the ball by not producing a full size N frame in .45 Colt.
My 25-5 is just about the perfect DA rev in .45 Colt. I won't get rid of it, even though after 6K rounds it does need some work.

Keep looking around and you'll find one. Just don't blow your money on anything else before you find it. Because the day after you buy the RedHawk you'll find the Smith .45 Colt you want.

I honestly wouldn't mind a Redhawk. In fact, it'd be nice 'cause then I could shoot plenty of the stuff from Buffalo Bore and Cor-Bon and not worry about hurting the gun. (Though in reality I can't afford a whole lot of this stuff.)

I just wish I could get one with, say a 4.5" barrel, without having to go custom.

S&W rotates which model (caliber) of Mountain Gun they produce on I believe a yearly basis. I thought the 625 45Colt was the current model, perhaps it's changeover time?

it's a 3" Lew Horton 625-7 in 45 LC I really like it have only run about a 100 round thru it but is very nice.

One year they're .45 Colts, one year they're .44 Maggies, one year they're .41 Maggies, next year they're discontinued, next year they're back. It's part of the mystique...

A local (Birmingham) distributer, 'Bangers', had a special batch made with both the Ahrends wood and usual Hogue rubber grips. See if your gun store gets their flyers - it was in there. My local dealer keeps that one in stock ~ $570 - pretty good deal considering the cost of that wood grip set. Mine, a 2001 model, shoots great with the square conversion grips from S&W (They look so much better with wood.). They even had a free S&W knife with that deal... I even thought about getting another one - I really like mine.

About that SRH .454 - they are a real headache to clean the carbon/lead residue that collects between the case and the bullet step after shooting .45 Colts. Additionally, I can get 1.5" groups @ 50yd with my scoped SRH and .454's - as big as ~5" with .45 Colts. It must be designed for, ie, have a slower rifling, the .454's. Great fun to shoot - a bit intimidating at the plate range - even if it has 200gr LRNFP wimpy .45 Colts aboard. That cut-down SRH does look interesting...

It'd be a seven to eight hour drive to the nearest place where they have decent gun shows. Add in gas, motel, etc., and the price of the gun goes up considerably.

Is the 329-PD the same frame as the Mountain Gun? And is the Mountain Gun the same frame as the 629?

Sorry, but I've never been able to keep the S&W nomenclature staright in my mind!

Anyway - anybody heard any plans to make a 329 in .45 Colt? That would be my dream revolver! Shoot plenty of .45 acp or light cowboy loads for practice and carry it in the bush with somewhat hotter stuff. Heck, might even make an impressive carry gun at times, since it is so light.

Highly recommend the 629 MG in .44. Bought one this summer and i love it.
