i took my 131 year 1876 in 45-60 old hunting this morning, it was a very cloudy and warm so i only stayed out untill ten a.m. and the ticks were getting hungry. i jumped 11 deer and as its doe only in the early season, i had to make sure i was shooting at a doe. i missed a standing shot at about 80yds in some brush at a very large doe, maybe i hit a small limb but a miss anyway. as i waited for daylight i wondered how many mornings this rifle waited for shooting light in its 131 years and how many hunters waited just like i did for the game to appear in their sights over the years. eastbank.

It Happens.

I wouldn't let it bother me. I missed one with a modern, state of the art, bolt gun . If you hunt long enough you are going to miss once in a while. That is a cool old gun. I have two consignment guns on Gunbroker right now that dates 1871 and a 1873. Love em.

I'm happy to see the old gal still going hunting. Most guns of that vintage are gone, and the ones left are mostly safe queens. Misses happen, no biggie. I would rather miss than make a bad shot.

Neat old gun, I've got 1873 Winchester (44-40), that I screwed up and did a complete restoration on it, but it was in pretty bad shape if I do say so myself. Wonder how many deer it took down in it's life time though, btw the barrel on mine was pristine, and according to Winchester was made in 1895 if I remember right.

Nothing better than deer hunting in the woods. Hunting with a gun with history makes it even better. Course making your own history is great too! A miss is a memory too.

eastbank, good try and great pictures. Looks like you and I are about the same age. I very seldom ever shoot offhand any more. You could probably find a place to tie a shooting stick on that good looking 4 wheeler!
