+1 on Riverdog and I can tell you for a fact there are times that you cannot "phone home" when things are going down just to get permission. That is why you are designated as a HAC or PIC or MC. If you are in those positions, YOU are responsible for the conduct of the aircraft, including any deviations from the flight plan. When I was still on AD I was a mission commander on the P-3's. I heard a call on 243.0, and I directed the acft to orbit until I figured out what was going on, determined we were needed, and we broke off our planned mission to assist. I made all possible attempts to phone home, but ended up having to use a radio relay via the JFK to tell homeplate we were going to PLE on the particular evolution.
What the pilot should have done was keep his mouth shut , taken the butt chewing and gone about his business. If he had, we would never have heard about it :banghead:
