Gentlemen,
This file tells us that SA could have been the only source of Production of the M1 Garand Rifle. Check the date. Read it over and see what Ordnance was up to. Could this be another part of what I call Winchester-Gate ?

The main problem was that there was a much LARGER US Army, USN, USMC and the USAAF.

That's interesting, Ed!

It doesn't really allude to the tides of war that would be evident right about then. Hitler's Blitzkrieg of Poland was already well underway, and that 450,000 troop estimate in the letter was a bit conservative. Things would change drastically, of course, after December 7, 1941.

The low numbers of M1 available at this time is well known. Due to the Depression, lack of funding, isolationism and some start-up problems the production of the M1 took a long time to get off the ground. It was initially approved in 1932 if memory serves correctly. The US Army had a field strength equal to that of Sweden in 1939 and almost no tanks. The Marines on Guadalcanal fought with 1903 Springfields.

Ron in PA,
The M1 Garand was adopted in 1936 however no production M1 Garands came about until July of 1937. Remember, look at the date. WW 2 had already broken out in Europe. Japan and China also were at War. The file looks like the US would stay out of WW 2 with such a small amount of Troops and M1 Garands on Order.
Thanks for your comebacks
It does make one wonder
Thanks again
