No public appetite for gun bans?

In the wake of the last decade or 15 years of mass shootings, I would have thought that a gun ban or magazine ban would have been at the top of the list for Congress.

But it hasn't come. Why?

Columbine, VT, Arizona, and a few others.

I don't think Americans have an appetite for gun/magazine/ammo bans.

We got lucky with the sunset provision on the AWB. Also, a lot of Dems lost their jobs voting for the AWB. Lesson learned and message sent.

We got lucky with a pro-gun President who appointed critical members to the SCOTUS at a critical time, which resulted in a 5-4 victory in DC v. Heller. That also led to a victory in McDonald. These critical wins secured the 2A as an individual right!

I think 9/11 and GWOT woke up Americans. Gun sales and ammo sales skyrocketed. I also think the election of an anti-gun President and the most sales of guns and ammo in histroy sent a loud pro-gun message.

I see that people are uncertain and worried about the economic and security and health of the nation. High crime on TV, lots of anarchism, the various demonstrations and movements across the nation, the $16 Trillion debt, staggering economy...

I think that in times of uncertainty like this, people do "cling" to their guns. Am I being naively optimistic that gun control is not on the table?

What are your theories?

I think you are probably right, but I also feel that pro gun could a passing fad. I have been wrong before .

Columbine was during the ban. Maybe some people realized it did not work.

I think magazine bans are more likely than banning the guns themselves. I can see a ban on drum magazines being put through, or requiring they be registered as Destructive Devices.

Still, you'll see (do see?) them actively trying to gain traction with the issue in non-debate media scenarios with guests and talking heads feeling out the populace for support and passively testing the waters with a flurry of "polls."

Note the amount of talking heads relating what they "feel" or "think" without making too many outright demands for action while waiting for their marching orders from the "east."

+1, they are seeking an searching for a way to accomplish this. They waited 60 years for "universal" health care coverage. They are patient and deliberate and will wait for their opening.

All they need is a new generation that doesn't understand the importance of constitutional rights. They are training that generation right now.
