For some depressing (to me anyway) reasons, I will be temporarily located near Rochester, NY for the next year. Because of NY's idiotic gun laws, it appears to me that I will not be able to possess a gun in the State during this time.

Is this correct?

You can posses any rifle or shotgun that you would like, including AWs, but there is a mirror of the federal AW ban in NYS, so you must comply with that. For pistol ownership, you must have a NYS driver's license and register your pistols with the state. In addition, I would live in a suburb (like Greece or Fairport) of the city of Rochester as the actual city is rather dangerous. Plus the city has a regional AW ban that is MUCH stricter than the NYS one.

So, rifles don't require registration? If they don't, I might think about learning to shoot rifles.

Any good ranges around there?

(For the foreseeable future, I have no plans of owning any "AW"s, so I'm not restricted in that respect.)

no rifle or shotgun registration on a state level, but some municipalities require you inform them of what you have, contact the police department of where you are planning on living, they will tell you.

There are two private ranges around that are nice and also fairly reasonable to join ,
on the east side http://www.gclrochester.com/
and to the south http://www.rochesterbrooks.org/
There are a few more but I have not been to them and do not have a link.
Also several nice firearm dealers around other than the big box stores.
Most of the rural counties outside of Rochester ( Monroe county ) are actaully pretty gun friendly for NYS.

Wouldn't he need a pistol license as well?

Yes , you need a NYS pistol permit to start , then each individual pistol must be registered on your permit or added as an amendment.

From The Monroe Cty website

Applying for a Pistol Permit

You may apply for a pistol permit if you have been a resident of Monroe County for at least six months at the time of application. By New York State Law, you must be 21 years of age to be issued a pistol permit. You must be 21 years old in order to purchase a pistol. You are not required to buy or own a gun at the time of application and your permit will not expire even if you don’t place a pistol on it. Please allow approximately six months to process your application once it is submitted.

Thanks for all of your help. I think I've gotten all the information I need.

Now I just need to find an apartment.
