I am a happy new SR556E owner. I have a couple of noob questions that I was hoping someone could help me with. (Otherwise I may call Ruger, which I have never done.)
1. I have not been successful at disassembling the regulator assembly per figure 19, page 26 of the manual. It says to push the regulator cam pin out, which I have done, and then "remove the regulator, regulator detent, and piston by rotating the regulator until the flat lines up with the hook" (page 26).
I assume that the above means that after pushing out the cam pin, you rotate the regulator so that it is between two of the numerical settings, i.e. between 2 and 3, and not held in place by the hook. And then pull out. Mine, in my not-yet-fired SR556, does not want to pull out. Do I just need to give it more elbow grease, or am I doing something wrong?
2. Do most SR556 owners disassemble and clean the bolt? Any reason not to pull out the bolt cotter pin, pull out the firing pin and housing assembly now and then to clean it? What are other SR556 owners doing? In the Army we always did this as second-echelon maintenance. My guess is that the piston system keeps the bolt pretty clean. The manual is silent on this question other than to provide the exploding diagram.
Thanks for any help!
