Greetings:
To all of the SKS afficianados out there, I could use some advice on a nice shooting SKS-D I've come into.

I purchased it from the widow of a friend of mine, unaware I had a 'D' model. I thought it had been modified after production to accept the AK mags that she gave me with the gun. It is in terrific shape, and I recently mounted a set of Tech Sights on it, and it has become a real shooter. Questions I need assistance with:

1. I want to hunt with it. What type of 5 round mag would I need? AK?
2. The rifle functions flawlessly except: The Bolt will not lock to the rear. How can I fix that? Is it normal? Is it the gun or the mags? It does it with the 4 mags I have. A bit annoying to not know when you are out of ammo.

Thanks in advance,
LGJ

5-round AK magazines should work.

Standard AK magazines have no last round bolt hold-open. That is normal. If it really bothers you, Yugoslavian magazines do have this feature, not sure if it will work on an SKS though.

Yugo magazines

I should note that although these will hold the bolt open on the last round, the bolt will slam home when you remove the magazine. A way around this on AK's is to notch the safety selector to hold the charging handle. I'm not sure what sort of workaround would work on a SKS.

The bolt not locking open is a "feature". I know it stinks but that is how the AK works also. I have a "D" model with the stripper clip guide but it is useless since the bolt does not lock open. I have not tried Yugo's though.

Dudes:
Thanks for the rapid replies. I figured that was the case. Just find it odd that an assault type rifle would not have a bolt hold open function on an empty mag.

It isnt a big deal really, and makes it easier to train people on it. Look around for some wolf 154 grain soft points as well, they are supposed to be the better end of imported hunting ammo for the x39.

I think there are plans, or actual last round hold opens (easiest to just buy a specialty mag)
for the D, but you have to look.

The SKS isn't an "assault rifle". it is the last of a breed from before the "assault rifles" came along.

A mutated SKS is still not an assault rifle.

The standard SKS is designed with a BHO. Mutants may or may not have this.

Ok. Even though I said assault type rifle because the conversation included AKs; how about battle rifle? Come to think of it, given that an SKS-D fires an intermediate cartridge and has a detachable box, why not call it an assault rifle?

Basically, what I'm saying is, I'm not at all sure how your comment is germane to the thread.

SKS was an urban combat self loading rifle, the last great design from WWII. Wish I still had my Yugo. Have fun with you D model, passed on one stupidly years ago...
